10 days pre-op and family has strep!!! WWYD?

So, hubby has had a sore throat for the past 2 days. This a.m. he woke up with, of course, a sore throat still and white patches in the back of his throat. And probably pink eye, but that's beside the point. Youngest has a sore throat as well. Oldest was sick last week, not strep, and is fine right now.

Anyway! To my point!

Hubby is going to the doc this afternoon. If he has strep (or even if he doesn't) should I ask the doc to give me some antibiotics preemptively? I do not want to have to reschedule surgery because of this. I feel fine throat wise; I have a runny nose but that's my normal, really, and probably allergy related. I would ask for a Z-Pak so that I would only be taking the abx for 5 days instead of 10 or more. Is it even okay to take antibiotics this close to surgery?

You should let your surgeon know, but it should be ok because you are going to get antibiotics while you are in the hospital anyway.

Oh, I plan on calling their office on Monday!

Yep, I was going to suggest calling the dr.  I had a mild sinus infection, and my surgeon's assistant told me they only care about two things:  temperature is normal, and pressure is normal.  She said it would be better sooner than later to get antibiotics if necessary, to ensure my pressure & temp would be normal.

Thank you! I almost never run a fever even when I'm ill (my mother hated that when I was a kid) so temp should be fine. And well, if by pressure you mean blood pressure, mine is always high, but I'm not concerned about that--it'll be "normal for me" anyway.

And yeah, I'd like to start abx today if necessary so that I can get past it sooner. Plus I'm thinking that abx on a liquid diet will really suck!!

Just wanted to update that my home diagnosis was wrong. Hubby does not have strep, yay! Looks like a sinus infection, which sucks for him, but at least it won't affect me! (Which is all that really matters, right?)
