I think it is currently recommended that people do 45-60 minutes of cardio 5 days a week to lose weight.  Early out it you are going to lose weight even if you don't exercise, but I found that exercise helped break stalls and kept my loss consistent.  You will also find as you get stronger that you will need to change what you do.  When you feel ready add some intervals.  Some sort of strength training is also important.  As we get older we start losing muscle mass. It also increases your metabolism.
