My constant eating was a sign of...

I saw my surgeon last week after I had done a barium swallow after complaining to my doc about stomach pain that was only alleviated by eating.  I am two years post-wls and had not lost near the amount of weight I thought I should have lost by now.  I had attributed this sad state of affairs to my constant grazing.  I felt constant hunger pangs...or so I thought.

Turns out I have an ulcer, and it showed up on the barium swallow.  My surgeon explained that ulcer pain feels like hunger pains so similarly that patients can mistake an ulcer pain for a hunger pain...and eat to medicate the pain.  Gotcha!  I'm not saying this is true for everybody or even for a majority of grazers, but I am glad I looked into the possible causes of my constant "hunger" pain.  Other than the need to eat constantly I had zero other symptoms of having an ulcer.  Just a constant pain that was relieved by food.

BTW, since I've been on my ulcer medication my eating is under control again, something it had not been for about a year now.  It feels great to know I'm back on the healthy road.  Thanks for reading.

glad they found it and it wasn't bleeding as once they start bleeding it can get dangerous real fast. I had one early out that bled for 3 days and I actually required a transfusion.

My ulcer hurt that exact same way, The pain felt like the worse gnawing hunger I had ever had like I was absolutly starving. It would suprise me because the pain would often occur after a meal and I would think maybe I am not eating enough but I never dreamed it was an ulcer until I was passed out on the floor in the middle of the night and then put in the hospital for 3 days with blood transfusions and the whole bit.

I am so glad you posted this so others might know the symptoms of an ulcer, and get checked out before they get sick.
