I'm curious as to when people started swimming post-op?

I was told to avoid it for at least 4-6 weeks.

I had my RNY on 7/19/12 and I was back at the pool on 8/4/12.  My surgeon said it was ok as long as the incisions were completely healed.  And since I can't really walk for exercise due to severe arthritis in both knees, I was happy to get back.  I'm not a real swimmer though, I just do a little treading back and forth and some deep water aerobics.

I had a meeting with my surgeon 2 weeks after my RNY they took the stitches out and said I could go back to swimming and I did the next monday, with no problems but I just kind of floated around no real hard swimming. By the way I will be leaving in 30 min to do it today.

Medically when your wounds are healed and you get clearance from your surgeon.

For me I don't swim any longer I prevent drowning with slight forward momentum!

I resumed "swimming" when I got into Triathlons.

I think it was about two weeks later. I highly recommend it! Swimming is good excercise but easy on the joints. I used it and walking as my primary cardio for the first three months after surgery. Happy swimming!

I was told no swimming until 4 weeks out.  My Surgeon said he doesn't allow any of his patients to submerge in water until the incisions are healed.

I had a full open surgery so I was not allowed in the water until the staples came out.
I remember the first time in the pool felt awesome!!!! All the weight off your feet and nothing pulling on the incision.
As far as exercise all I could do was float around and get in some walking.
I wasn't able to do full swimming for about 8 weeks.
