Opinions Wanted: Loose skin due to fast weight loss or tighter due to slow loss?

I was told my my NUT if i lose no more than 2-3 pounds a week you wont have all the loose skin when you reach goal weight.

1)  Vets:  Did you lose weight fast and have a lot of loose skin or did you lose slowly and and have some loose skin but not bad?  i know everyone is different and all results are different, but just wanted to hear how it went for you and to see if the NUT is right.

2)  Do you think exercise helps tighten "skin" or makes you just drop weight faster adding to the excess skin issue?

Thank you for taking the time to reply

Exercise doesn't help tighten skin, but when you firm up, you just look better.

I lost more slowly and while I certainly have loose skin, it's not that bad considering I lost 200lbs. I do think losing very quickly is one component of having alot of loose skin. Genetics, age, having children, and overall health are others.

Family genetics, your age, how heavy you are, body shape, etc. are factors on lose skin.  Wt loss goes at it's own rate, it's not 100% controllable.  You can firm up some loose skin areas, but not 100%.  2-3 pounds a week is not going to effect whether you have lose skin or not. Exercise, drinking plenty of fluids, food choices, etc. help you with the wt loss, but nothing will make the skin go away.  Some use Spanx or a similar product, some just "live with it", some have the panni surgery to just remove lose skin, and others have the $$$ for the plastic surgeon to do a TT, or thigh lift, or arm lift, etc.  DAVE

Your nutritionist doesn't know what (s)he is talking about.  How quickly you lose weight has NOTHING to do with excess skin!  The skin has either been stretched beyond its level of elasticity (where it cannot "snap back") or it has not.  That is depending on your genetics (some people have skin that is simply more elastic than others), age (our skin becomes less elastic as we age)," how much the skin was stretched, and for how long it was stretched.

Exercise doesn't do ANYTHING for skin.  It can build (to a small degree) the muscle below the skin, which may may make the skin look a LITTLE less loose, but oly if you have a very small amount of stretched skin.

Nothing but plastic surgery will address excess skin.

I was gonna just write "your NUT is nuts!"...  It scares me when I read some of the things these people are telling WLS patients...

I don't know if there is actually anything to it or not, but I was considered a "slow loser" and do not have the hanging skin issue.  I'm not tight because I'm 57 and am much too lenient with the exercise, but I don't have hanging skin, so have often wondered myself if the reason for this is the fact that I did lose the weight slower.

I lost more slowly than most and I still had TONS of excess skin. I even still have sagging skin on my lower arms below my elbows! even if I had lost the 185 pounds 2 pounds a week, I would still have had the extra skin!

You lost much less weight than many of us. I think that is the difference.

I lost VERY fast - 120lbs in 6 months ... But, I only had a 40 BMI at surgery, I had not been MO very long (2 years) - I have good genes and I had very little excess skin ...

Luck of the draw ...

I am 56yrs old and have inflated/deflated myself so many times over the years that the speed of which I have lost hasn't mattered. I had a ton of loose skin before surgery...so you can imagine what I must look like now! I hope you have a minimum of loose skin...that's all I can give you!
