Why?

I seem to have forgotten a few reasons why, for some of our rules. I can find in my books where it says not to, but not the reason why. So maybe ya'll can help.

Why can't we drink carbonated beverages?
Why can't we drink caffeine?
Why can't we drink and eat at the same time?
Annnnd why can't we drink out of straws?

I think that's it. I've been following all my rules, I just really want to know why they're there.

We can drink carbonated beverages.  They cause discomfort for some people, in which case they often choose not to.  They will not stretch your pouch or cause any damage, though.

We can drink caffeine.  Some people choose not to for a variety of reasons, including the fact that it can aggrevate an ulcer and cause insomnia.  Personally, I think it's fine in moderation.

If we drink with our meals, it washes food out of the pouch so we get hungry sooner.  Most people prefer to feel full as long as possible.

We can drink with straws.  If it causes you to swallow too much air and causes discomfort, then don't do it.  Most people have no problem with it.

See that's what I thought, theyre more of cautionary things, but my surgeons office makes them all seem life or death.

I agree with Kelly on all of the above. Here is a YouTube video that really hits the mark about drinking with meals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR0VM3mnsgM

I've never seen that video and haven't had difficulties drinking with or right after I eat but seeing this video is an excellent visual.

Very informative for people struggling with drinking and eating together.

Everything Kelly said is exactly what my surgeon told me.  I can only drink a little carbonation at a time. Also, I do have to take tiny sips of drink when I eat.

Another thing to remember about carbonated beverages:  "Regular" ones have lots of sugar and are obviously not a healthy choice.  "Diet" drinks are full of chemicals.  Many people drink them, but I prefer not to put those chemicals in my body.  So for me, it's not about the carbonation.  I stay away from soda because of the sugar and the chemicals (plus the really nasty after-taste.).

Drinking while eating is what I imagine is going to be my biggest stumbling block.  I have always downed massive amounts of water with meals.  I even remember my mother telling me as a child (and I was not overweight) not to wash my food down.  I am trying to practice not doing this and it is difficullt.

If I even attempt to drink too early after eating, I devil  It NEVER ends well ...

A habit takes a couple of weeks to form - which is about how long you have until surgery, isn't it?   It'll be less painful if you do it now rather than leave it til afterwards ...
