Keep waiting for something bad

Last Thursday I went to an RNY support group. First, I am SO thankful I had the surgeon and hospital that I did. I heard nothing but terrible horror stories from all those women. I am 17 days post op. Aside from some pain I haven't had any problems. Not a single complication.... I get in my fluids, most of my protein, no vomiting...... Yet I am TERRIFiED after going to that support group.  I know  I should relax but I am just afraid of everything that can go wrong now.

I would not worry about the what ifs. No one has a guarantee of no complications. All we can do is follow our doctors instructions. If you have any questions about strange symptoms call your doc and ask the office. Best of luck to you in this crazy ride.

Do not jump on the woe is me band wagon.  Keep looking positively at your own success.  I too have not had any complications and I am now 15 months post-op.    Continue with the support group.  It sounds like they need your positive story to counteract the negativity of others.

Good luck.

I'm sorry that your support group is so negative. My support group is a bunch of positive ladies and gentlemen who are amazing at sharing their stories and answering questions. Sounds like they need your positive story there for sure!

Not everyone has complications. You just hear about it more because no one is going to complain about the lack of complications.

I haven't had any serious complications. I feel great and I'm doing fabulous! Next time, at your support group, say that! Let them know you've had a good recovery and are doing wonderful.

What Dee said!!

Most people don't have complications, but the ones who do are more vocal because they need support.

I, too, encourage you to go to the group and be vocal about NOT having any problems.  I can guarantee that someone there will appreciate hearing that!  Imagine if you were pre-op hearing all those horror stories and not hearing anyone say they have had not issues! (Also, if you have anyone who is one of the few who actually find a sort of pleasure in playing the martyr regarding how difficult this process is (and is not the "easy" way out), perhaps it will help them as well...)

I'll be honest, I skipped through this weight loss journey - I still even have my gallbladder    I lost my weight in 6 months and am now coming up for my 9 year anniversary and am still maintaining ...

Yes, I have diabetes now and I still have the auto immune diseases I had before, but I am almost 100% certain that I would be way sicker if my BMI were still 40 and I bet I would be on insulin and not well controlled on a bit of Metformin, diet and exercise!!!

There are lots of people *****vel in their illness and complications and they do tend to take over at support groups - even trying to outdo each other at times LOL.   But don't let them put you off - make it your mission to pay it forward to all those pre-ops out there who are second guessing because ALL they hear are the horror stories.

I know I **** people off here when I say this but this really IS the easy way out and as an intelligent woman, I'm proud of myself for taking it all those years ago and you should be too!

Im 12 days post op. I had no pain, no nausea from the get go. I tell you when I came online and read some of the peoples stories ......I was feeling bad for them and didnt feel I should say how good it was for fear of something going south on me or making others resent me.
I only went to our support group once pre op. I toying with the thought of going this weeks if my hubby will take me.
I go back for my f/u appt. tomorow. Im anxious to start my pureed foods. Hopefully things continue to go as well.
