Carb Counting?

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if any of you carb count? I keep to a high protein diet plus lots of fiber and healthy food choices but heard from a few people that they carb count.

If so how much carbs do you consume?

My weight loss has slowed(which I expected) and my appetite has returned especially in the evenings so I am trying to control this so it doesn't get out of hand. I thought carb counting might help.

Any feedback would be helpful.

For my nutritionist, it is the % of calories. So I try to limit myself currently at 30% carbs and less than 10% fat and 60% protein. Some days my carbs are less, but protein is my 'big' piece of the pie and as I transition from shakes to chewing food at dinner, I am going to be very mindful of the carbs.

My NUT's plan broke it down to b/w 30-50g carbs within the first year and around 80g daily in maintenance. I do go above that for special occasions and when I'm training for distance running (e.g. runs >2 hrs).

Thanks. I kept a running total yesterday and it was around 50g. That may be hard to do daily. Some fruits have alot of carbs.

I will try to keep it around that and see if it helps.

Thanks for your help.

Fruit and dairy are definitely my carb traps. I don't necessarily count the carbs but look at what they came from

I just saw my nutritionist today, she told just worry about the proteins, and to only have 2 servings of healthy carbs a day.

I don't count.  I don't do much starchy carbs so it mostly comes from dairy and fruits and veggies.

I am like Lori... I don;t count carbs (my surgeon said if we made healthy food choices, the carbs and fat would "take care of themselves"), but I avoid "white" carbs (most of my carbs are form dairy, whole grain, and veggies).

I have been doing some research on kidney stones, especially after WLS because we are more prone to them after RNY and DS and I wanted to understand why (since I am now on round 3 of stones in 6 years and never had them even once in 45 years before my RNY), and according to the doctors at the Cleveland Clinic (one of the top facilities in the country) people who get less than 100g of carbs per day are more prone to kidney stones.  That might be a bit too high when you are in the losing phase, but the point is that if you limit the carbs too much you are at an increased risk of kidney stones (and passing a kidney stone hurts like hell... the worst pain I have EVER had, including two bouts of pancreatitis, several open surgeries and a VERY painful tummy tuck).

Good to know. Thanks for sharing. I usually average between 100-150 grams of carbs per day. No kidney stones yet (knock on wood).
