Tomorrow I will be 4 weeks out. I am sorta confused in what I should be eating. I am also concerned about not getting enough protein in. My Dr says to eat 3 times a day. No snacks andno pprotein shakes. I can eat less than my thumb or I start feeling sick. How does expect me to get in 80 grams of protein. I am only allowed liquids, jello, pudding, Popsicles, a little milk and egg whites. I know every doctor is different but I am barely eating yet I haven't lost anything in 2 weeks. I am down 23lbs since my surgery though.

this is a first. i've never heard of a doctor prohibiting protein shakes. and you're still on full liquids. girl, get some protein powder and start drinking shakes! you need the nutrition.

also, you can only eat tiny amounts. you're nowhere near meals or snacks territory, so the doc's suggestion to eat 3 meals an no snacks is ridiculous. seriously. this doc is dumb. i'm sorry. see if you can find a nutritionist with bariatric knowledge, or maybe you can join a local bariatric group, even one run by another practice. you need another information source.

stick around here. many helpful folks with alot of knowledge.

Some docs recommend getting protein all from food, no shakes, but that's pretty much impossible early out.

Seeing a registered dietician would be a good idea - nutritionists don't have to have any degree and they are not licensed in any way, so a registered dietician would be better.

Did you ask him how he expects you to get enough protein?  I don't know how you could drink enough milk or eat enough egg whites to get anywhere close to enough protein.

I am almost five years post op and I still could not get enough protein if I didn't eat more than three times a day.  You'll have to decide if your doctor's plan is going to work for you or not.  I wouldn't follow a plan that required I only eat three times a day and not get enough protein.

Can you eat Greek yogurt or cottage cheese?  Try 1/4 to 1/2 cup of yogurt or cottage cheese or scrambled egg every 3 hours. And drink your water in between. But I had trouble eating in the first month too and relied on a protein shake to help get in protein.

I agree, this sounds crazy.  But another idea for  getting in protein is to buy the unflavored protein powder by Unjury or another brand and add it to soft foods like cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, greek yogurt, etc.  You can sprinkle it on most anything.  If you add it to something hot make sure it's under 140 degrees or it will clump.

I haven't had surgery yet, but my surgeon's protocol and food progression is 3 weeks liquids, 3 weeks soft and then start testing regular foods as tolerated.  Shakes are a must and they also recommend, once you get on to soft foods,  6 small meals throughout the day.

My surgeon also recommends using Lactose free milk to start until you see how you tolerate dairy.

Best,

Thanks for all the imput. There is no way I course eat 1/3 of a cup or 1/2. I can barely fill up a one ox medicine cup and eat it all without my chest starting to hurt. I added up calories and I dont even take in 100-150 tops. Is this normal for my stage. I wish I had a meal plan or at least an idea of how a sample day should go at 4 weeks out.

There are many of us who had this surgery with NO protein shakes (and we're still alive GASP!!!!)   However, no one will have expected us to get 80gms of protein in at 4 weeks LOL!!!    Are you sure you got that right, because I highly suspect you have misunderstood what you are supposed to be doing?

The rule is usually 30g at 30 days, 60g at 60 days and 90g at 90 days if you are not expected to drink protein shakes.

No one gets a protein deficiency in 4 weeks and the no protein shake regime requires you to make A LOT of effort in eating high protein foods.

I think you need to call your Dr's office and get firm advice on what you are supposed to be doing, because you probably won't get consistent advice that matches his regime on here.

I am almost 6 months out and I am only allowed 60-70 grams of protein.  I would talk to a Nutritionist.

I will be three weeks out on friday. My doc moved me to puree at day seven and at day 14 i was moved up to soft foods. I have been eating mashed potatos chili chicken tuna chesse soft crackers eggs and ham. I can get about 1/2 cup of food and have three meals a day. I wasnt loseing anything for seven days so i called my diatition and she said i needed to get more calories in so i started the next day and i was losing again.
I use the unflavored protien powder it mixes well with almost anything
I get the fat free pudding mix and mix it with one cup skim milk one cup water and four scoops of protien powder so for ever half cup serving it has 30 grams of protien.
