Hi All!

I am scheduled for RNY July 1st and am getting very excited!!  My only question, and I keep forgetting to ask my surgeon, is if there is any restriction on driving after surgery and for how long??

Mine was two weeks, but it varies by surgeon.  Some say it is fine as long as you are not taking pain pills.

24 hours narcotic free is the general surgery recommendation.  I drove the day after discharge (day 3) as I had no narcotics after the day of surgery.

My doctor says 24 hours without pain meds.

Most say it's fine to drive as soon as you stop taking pain meds.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

In our pre surgical paperwork, they said we could drive when not on pain meds, but also as long as you can twist to your left and look over your shoulder for passing traffic etc without pain/discomfort.

Good luck :)
