How soon can you start going to a gym or start doing weight training?   Is it possible to try to get a jump start on the excess skin or will I have it regardless?  I know I will some but I'm talking to the point where I have to stay covered in my clothes :(

Exercise won't get rid of excess skin.  You cannot ungrow skin by exercising.

Your surgeon should tell you when it's OK to start doing weight training.  I was not supposed to do anything more strenuous than walking until six weeks post op.

I was told no exercise except walking until I'm cleared by my surgeon to do so.

As for excess skin, that will depend on so many factors, including genetics, age, if you're a smoker, etc. I know I'm going to have excess skin (although hopefully not too much!), however I'd rather have loose/excess skin than to be morbidly obese. Perfectly okay with that trade-off!

I was able to start at 3 weeks, I was walking 4 miles/ day within a week of surgery and then I was able to add intensity and weight lifting at 3 weeks per my doc. Excess skin may happen but don't judge the first losses as the rule.  My skin is still rapidly changing with my stalls and losses.  I'm going to have excess skin but as I build muscle underneath and my body is still changing, I've noticed how my skin is changing too.  I haven't lost any weight in 6 weeks but my skin has tightened up a lot during this time.  Start saving now and if you want to you can do plastic surgery!
