I can totally relate.  I am 3 days post-op, and I already feel like the two weeks I planned to take off might be inadequate.  My "VERY high stress job" often takes a toll on my health -- not only because it's really tough to eat properly, but because the stress inevitably gives me knots in my stomach.  I cannot imagine returning too quickly to those stressors would be a good move for my healing stomach.

Good for you for making a decision in the best interest of your health.

Assuming you are using sick leave, remember that you EARNED that time, so you should not feel bad for using it.  And when you do return, you will be a healthier version of JuniperBerry, with more energy and higher productivity. In the end, your decision will benefit them as well.

Making this decision to invest time in your health isn't selfish. Actually, it's strategic.

My surgeon recommended 4 weeks off, and I'm glad I listened to him.  He told me that I would be pretty much healed after two weeks, but that I needed the additional two weeks to concentrate on learning how to eat, and that trying to do that in a work environment could be difficult.  I did work from home quite a bit during those second two weeks (with my surgeon's approval).  I take a lot of conference calls, so it worked out well and was pretty easy.  I would not have wanted to be in the office during that time.  You made the right decision.  It is not a selfish one, but one that will set you up well for the future.

Good for you! I am planning on 3 weeks myself, because that is what my surgeon gives everyone as a baseline. He said "Sure, you can go back to work as soon as YOU feel able, but you're not going to be rushed into it on my account".

I think the mental part of the recovery and preparation is just as important as recovering physically so it's not selfish at all, although I can empathize that it might bring feelings of guilt or indulgence!

This isn't selfish.  You're doing the right thing for you.  Take this time to figure out your menus - especially with a job like yours, you'll need that time!  This is a huge investment you've made in yourself, so take this time and maximize that investment.  You are worth it!

I travel too, every week.  3 hour drives each way to a client, 3 too 4 nights in a hotel.  I'm nearly 4 months post op and I'm still figuring it out, but have my thermos bottle, a healthy snack, and other tools to rely on now.  You'll find your way, and you'll be glad you took the time.
