Hello Everyone!

I recently decided originally I wanted the sleeve, only to be disappointed to find out that my insurance only covers the band and RNY. The band scares me, and I almost decided to give up until someone told me most people can't tell a difference in the sleeve and RNY who have had one and had a revision to the other.

My biggest concern has been that I will not get enough nutrients to sustain my body when I am living an incredibly active lifestyle. I play roller derby which burns 1500 calories in a 2 hour practice and 2300 in a 3 hour practice and I attend practices 2-4 times weekly, on top of running. It's physically and sometimes mentally demanding but it is my vitality, my heart, and my soul. Giving it up is not an option.

I was also worried about the osteoporosis risk as obviously, broken bones is a big risk in roller derby already. I don't want to put myself at any further risk of injury or a broken ankle.

Anyone have a few words of wisdom they could share with me?

You are not going to become vitamin deficient with RNY unless you totally ignore your labs and your supplements. I have labs done yearly and they are fine. I take a multivitamin, iron, calcium supplements, vitamin D and B12. Your sports performance should be greatly improved with losing about 100 pounds.

The extra calories that you are burning will come from your body's stored fat.

That's actually part of the reason why I want to drop the weight. Being morbidly obese and being on skates takes its toll in your knees and ankles, cause mine are sore all the dang tkme. And while I can run at least 30 minutes, my endurance on skates sucks. We have to be able to do 27 laps in 5 minutes and I can't seem to get over 23. I also get worn down pretty quickly when doing drills and such, sometimes to the point where I can't stand up its so physically exhausting.

I've also been with the team a year and a have and it sucks, because I've struggled to pass my skills test and I was told by the captain last time I would have, had my endurance not been so terrible. :(

Funny enough, I do know another derby girl who had surgery and she did improve greatly.

As a considerably slimmer person, your calories use during exercise will be a lot less too. Don't fall into the trap of eating those calories back.

There are lots of marathon runners and triathletes here who do just fine after RNY.

That's always been an issue for me. I'm so HANGRY I could eat a horse after practice sometimes. Sometimes it takes a while too for protein shakes to take care of the hanger.

I do Zumba many times a week. I think it's like burning 800 of more calories in a hour. I love it and I'm just fine, you will be too.

A combination of myfitnesspal and searching through roller derby specific exercise websites. Trust me when I say 700 calories an hour is about right. Sometimes I'm so exhausted I can't stand at the end of practice. They have us doing stuff like speed skating 27 laps in 5 minutes, pushing between 1-3 girls at one time trying to stop you, lots of quick footwork and movements, not to mention you basically do squats the entire time. The amount of energy you burn burn is incredible and you have to have a lot of endurance. That's not counting having to hit people and hold girls back who are trying to get through to score points.
