Does RNY help acid reflux?

Had my lapband out for 3 months already and my acid reflux is back and it's quite bad. I have a known sliding hiatus hernia. My surgeon is now discussing the option of RNY as a fix for the acid and of course will help with weight loss but at a weight of 200 pounds and BMI of 32 am not considered "big"

Sharing information regarding a recent conversation with someone about your size asking questions regarding his decision to have gastric bypass or to get a magnetic implant for his acid reflux. He chose the magnetic implant. Sorry, his surgery is too new to relay his results.

Rny usually makes acid reflux go away. Fixing the hernia will help too.

Many with the band or VSG that suffer from gerd revise to RNY, with great results.

My GERD and esophagitis have resolved after gastric bypass.

GERD history: I?ve suffered for years and have been taking Prilosec for 10+ years. Three years ago, I had a LINX device inserted as part of a research study by the device manufacturer to resolve LES issues. It helped for the first year but then the heartburn and esophagitis returned and I was put back on PPIs. I decided to have bariatric surgery and was told VSG was not a viable option due to my pre-existing GERD.

I had Mini Gastric Bypass in April 2017 and four months later I stopped taking Prilosec and an EGD in Dec 2017 showed that the irritation/damage visible in an EGD done one month before surgery was no longer there.

I was a lightweight pre-op and am currently below goal weight.

Hi,

My reflux is resolved for the most part. I had a hernia and reflux and converted from sleeve to RNY. The original damage was done by a poorly placed band that was too small for my anatomy back in 2003.

Thank you all!

Now I am reassured RNY will help with reflux I just have to make the decision whether or not I want to opt for the surgery.

I had very bad reflux, GERD, and a hiatal hernia before I got RNY (almost 5 years ago) - I have had no reflux since !! But I can only speak for myself

my reflux completely disappeared the first two years post-surgery. It's back now, but in a much milder form. A couple of Tums (or similar OTC) will usually knock it out.

Thanks Catwoman7

I had the same experience with my reflux with the band. The first two years cleared up entirely and after that in a milder form but now I have no band it's back with a vengange!
