Vitamins/Schedule

Polly (my pouch) does NOT appreciate vitamins taken on an empty stomach! She has made this abundantly clear to me, most recently this morning. I felt mildly nauseated for about thirty minutes, then my mouth got all watery, like I was going to vomit. Of course, nothing materialized, because my stomach is empty. I felt for ten seconds like the dry heaves were on their way, so I ate two Papaya Enzyme tablets, and everything is settled now.

I'm trying to get my vitamin routine down, and I'm obviously struggling with it. And still learning what Polly will and won't tolerate at seven months post-op.

Any old-timers care to share their vitamin routine with me?

My obstacles are moving out of my way; my path is carved towards greatness

I've had the same problem. I learned to always take them with a meal or a small snack. It helps.

Good Morning! Sorry you are having trouble. As others have mentioned I always take my vitamins with food. I hope trying that will give you some relief.

Try taking them with yogurt if you can't tolerate other foods early in the morning.

I'm struggling, too. I am 3 weeks post-op, and vitamins and meds are my biggest struggle. Taking them the wrong way can put me in bed with pain. I am currently taking one pill at a time and trying to determine which pills are the biggest offenders. I always take with food, too.

No need to take them before eating, or all at once for that matter. Here are some quick tips for when/how to take them to get maximum performance and least nauseous.

  • Multi vitamins should be taken with food to increase absorption and decrease stomach upset. Take 200% of daily values (or double adult dose) and avoid time release capsules.
  • Take your multi and any additional iron separate from your calcium, or calcium rich foods, because iron decreases the amount of calcium that is absorbed.
  • Take your calcium citrate with vitamin D to help absorb the calcium

I literally made a spreadsheet schedule for my few few months post op that told me when to eat and drink and take vitamins so that my stomach could be full enough that I didn't feel ill while taking vitamins, but that was long enough after eating to wait 30 minutes before drinking to take my pills. I set alarms on my phone to remind me, and it was constantly buzzing. It's a lot of work at first to get this right!
