Ideas to avoid pain on eating

My surgery was 2/12/18 and I'm now on soft foods. I'm trying to learn the clues of fullness I ate 2 oz fish and was in excruciating pain. I try to stop before it happens, but I can't feel any signals that tell me to stop. So now I'm making sure I only eat about an ounce. What is the trick? And does it get better, I have a high pain tolerance but this is really awful.

The trick is to measure and eat slow. You won't be getting the signals you expect because your nerves were cut during surgery. The worst pain I ever had was when I had an egg after having some soup because I didn't "feel" full. Don't try to test your new pouch--it will not go well. Not everyone gets their "full" signal back and some get different ones. Some people hiccup or get a runny nose!

At this point make sure you eat ridiculously slow and chew really well.

Great responses from others, I can only add that i took my time in my progression of foods. I was two weeks behind my progression to soft foods and at least 2 weeks behind my progression to more dense proteins. I supplemented shakes and unjury chicken broth protein during that time to ensure I got the required protein in. Measure, weigh, eat slow and chew, chew, chew as you progress.

  1. Pre- Surgery/ Type 2 Diabetes, High BP and Cholesterol, treated with 6 medications, including Insulin. Post Op- low dose BP med 2022, Mounjaro 10/2023

HW - 299 , Consult day weight - 277, Day of surgery ( 11/19/2014) - 259,LW - 178, GW - 195, CW- 194.2 - reached goal

Sounds like 2 oz is too much for you right now. In the early days after surgery I could only eat 1-1.5 oz of dense protein and at 11 months post-op, 3 oz of moist chicken is a little too much. Take it slow and definitely measure your food so you can be accurate on what you tolerate and the ramp up to more. Good luck!

Great recommendations fom pther posters. Mine is, go so slowly. Your nerves were cut. At 18 months out I still do not have a clear full feeling unless I have overdone it, at which point pain kicks in. Eat slowly, progress to new foods slowly. If a food does not agree with you, back off and try again in a week or two. It does suck that even though your nerves were cut, the pain still kicks in if you overeat ;(.

It took months for me to tolerate most dense proteins including steak and chicken. I ate a ton of greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and used a lot of protein powders, including Unjury chicken broth and Syntrax Fuzzy Navel. I still have a Premier Protein every morning in my coffee.
