my daughter is only 3 (will be 4 in November) and my DH and I both had the surgery this year.
She loves to play rough so we did have to warn her right after that we had some "owwies on our tummies" and would need to be very careful for a while because we had surgery.
We didn't really talk to her at all about what it was for because she's really too young to get it, but we have been talking about losing weight and eating better to be healthy and be able to play with her more.

It all depends on your kids, their ages and comprehension levels...but I think if they are relatively young, explaining to them that you're having a procedure to help you lose weight to get healthy is probably all they need to hear.

As someone already said, you know your kids best, so let that be a guide for you.

My kids were 10 and 17 when I had my surgery. My 17 year old was old enough to understand and didn't have a lot of questions. My 10 year old was mainly concerned that I would "be the same person". With that kind of massive physical change, she was worried that I would transform mentally/emotionally as well.

I focused on the positive - the types of things I would be able to do with her that I couldn't do then - going on walks, riding rides at the amusement park, riding her hoverboard ;-) That got her excited that dad could do more "fun stuff".
