I am scared of carbs now.

I am 3 weeks post RNY and starting phase 2 of my menu. Yippee! I asked my doctor toady why I have to watch carbs. Since my calorie intake is so low, it seems carbs shouldn't be a bid deal. He said my pouch is not able to process carbs and even a small amount could cause dumping. After explaining what dumping is, I am checking labels closely. He said that doesn't mean no carbs, It means low carbs. My first meal after the visit was cottage cheese mixed with tuna. Yum!

Yes, and if you have them later on you may find that even if you can eat carbs fine, digesting them is extremely uncomfortable. It may not be the same for everyone of course, but the few slips I've had into bread-land left me extremely bloated, crampy, and full of painful gas. Maybe that goes away down the road, but I'm 6 months out and still don't really tolerate much for carbs. I've had a few potatoes (I grew a few in my garden) but I try to avoid bread, pasta, and rice like the plague. The discomfort just wasn't worth it.

carbs become sugar on our systems. As long as we give our bodies sugar in the form of carbs, our bodies won't break down our stored fat for energy. Burning that stored fat is what causes weight loss.

Everybody reacts to refined carbs differently. Some people really cannot digest them at all. Others, like me, could eat bread and pasta a month out with no physical or digestive distress what-so-ever. What is most important to remember, though, is what holly said. Even if you find that you can digest carbs no problem, they are still not recommended to eat. They inhibit weight loss due to turning into sugar, but also, you're shooting for 60g of protein a day. People generally can only eat about 600 calories a day for weight loss. High protein foods have about 10g of protein per 100 calories. So the math tells us that it is very hard to get all your protein in, stay in a good calorie range, and eat carbs.

And for me, it isn't worth it. Bread and pasta taste bland without adding extras (like alfredo sauce or butter) and at that point your adding a huge amounts of calories just to eat the refined carbs. It doesn't make since to me. Especially since things like pizza and sandwiches taste just a good without the bread/dough.

A sandwich tastes just as good without the bread...? There's no sandwich without bread!
