i started my 'blended' food today---with my sleeve i also had a hiatal hernia repaired BUT my surgeon really didnt tell me anything to expect from the hernia repair, it was like that was a mere afterthought to everything...i feel like the hernia repair is what caused me to have problems swallowing, the week of my surgery-and now that i'm on blended foods, when i swallow- my food feels like it has trouble passing at the top of my throat and then, again, in the center of my chest(which i'm guessing is where the hiatal hernia was repaired)...i want to know, from others who also had the hiatal hernia repair with their sleeves---did this happen to you? and will it go away? if so-when?
thanks!

I had a hiatal hernia repair at the time of surgery. There wasn't anything different to do, just followed the normal surgery diet plan. I still take prilosec otc and make sure I chew food real good. Haven't had any problems. Some people have the problems you are having that never needed a hernia repair. Hope things get better for you soon.

I had surgery Oct 4/11 and I was really surprised to find out that I also had a hiatal hernia repair (rather big one I heard). I am now on mushies and have no problems at all getting food to go down. Once after a few bites of eggs I felt it midway down my throat but then it went away. Got really full after only 2 1/2 bites - now that is great restriction!

Sorry can't be of more help. I was surprised that my doctor didn't give me any weight lifting restrictions especially with the hernia repair.

I also had an unknown hiatal hernia repaired and my doctor didn't say that anything different was to be expected. I am also having that feeling where things get stuck but they did tell me that I have a bit of a spasm, which can happen. They just said I might need to take deep breaths to get past it until it clears.
Good luck!

I also had a hiatal hernia repaired, and, as others have said there was no impact to diet.

I sincerely doubt your troubles have anything to do with the repair... Your esophagus is likely still irritated from the various tubes being shoved down your throat. The pressure at the center of your chest? That could be your new full signal. When I was freshly pre-op I would get that feeling after 1 or 2 bites of greek yogurt... now I get that same feeling after ~2 oz of protein.

how much protein does your doctor want you to eat, a day? mine wants 60 to 80 grams! if i only eat 2 oz. i would never hit my goal...BUT i am thinking  maybe i have over done it, on my 1st day! i tried to eat 4 oz. of blended chicken, and it took me over an hour to get 3 oz. down and then i just gave up on the last oz...

The first week or two I focused on just getting fluids in to avoid dehydration. My protein goal was 90g per day. I heavily used (and still use) protein shakes as a way to up the protein ante in my daily diet. I exclusively drink premier protein shakes because they're easy to find (Costco), decent price, and 30g protein per shake.

I don't know how far out you are, but even today I could not eat 4oz of blended chicken in one sitting... I was also instructed to not take more than 1/2 hour to eat... if you are taking an hour I would suggest you are eating too much. If you find a high protein, low cal/carb/fat shake you like that will greatly help you meet your protein needs.

My current daily routine is 2 shakes and one 2oz portion of meat/fish/poultry + bite of veggies I'm serving my family.

Make sure you are taking very small bites of food and not eating passed what you can handle. I also had the hiatal hernia repair surgery and haven't really noticed anything. Papaya enzyme does wonders if food feels stuck. I found it at Wal-Mart. Good luck.

I have the same feeling as you described.  I went to the doc and he said it is due to the large hernia that was removed and how small the stomach is now.  It is very frustrating- it seems I can't eat anything unless it is mushy and I take small bites and eat slowly.  He said it usually goes away around 6-7 months out,  I hope so- I'm 4 months out now,

Good luck
