Is sugar really public enemy #1?
So, just to add one more thing to this thread, what started the test on my middle brother was his habit of drinking 8 or so cans of Mtn Dew a day. My oldest brother read an article (was while I was in college - at least 15 years ago) about how some scientists consider skin to be its own organ, like a liver or heart. They found that skin can taste by rubbing garlic on the bottoms of volunteers feet and they were able to taste the garlic in their mouths a little while later. They also found that the brain reacts to sugar on the skin the same way it reacts to it being injested. It may not be able to absorb the calories from the sugar, but they actually saw metabolic changes occur consistant with eating sugar.
Okay, that's all the geek I got for now.
