I was wondering are we less likely to lose hair vs someone who has RNY because we absorb the nutrience from our food ?

Doesn't matter.  It doens't have to do with the lack of nutrients, it's just the shock of dropping that much weight that quickly.  The same thing would happen if you lost weight that quickly with no surgery.

NO we suffer the same! its METABOLIC-HORMONAL (estrogens/testosterone- aromatase) to dihydrotestosterone conversion at the hair follicle ....begins within HOURS of VSG/RNY/DS...does not usually manifest until 3-4 months out...typically. I would guess 95% of us suffer w/ temporary hair loss....completely stops once your weight loss stabilizes.  Other hormonal /nutritional deficiencies merely exacerbates it...like PCOS, Meno, thyroid, Iron deficiency in menses aged gals.  Ya only have to do an OH search and read the thousands upon thousands...for years....of posts .... peeps using biotin, hair skin, nails, adding zinc, selenium, silica, nioxin,  expensive hair shampoo systems,  upping their protein to well over 80gs during the critical stage 0-3 months....TO KNOW......ALL FOR NOT!!

has NOTHING to do with rapid weight loss, not high enough protein, a biotin deficiency, anesthesia,
we gotta stop w/ the powerful myths!  No matter how often we repeat a LIE...it doesn't make it THE TRUTH!!

Some info on acute telogen effluvium you may find helpful VSG HAIR LOSS
