Hi everyone,
October 3rd I went into surgery at a clinic for my sleeve.  When I woke up in the recovery room I was told that my sleeve wasn't done because my spleen was way toooooo large.  The surgery could not be performed at the clinic and could only be done at the hospital.  They had informed me that they would give me more information at the next visit on the 15th of October when I saw my surgeon.  Well yesterday I had my visit.  I was told my spleen was way to big, it is on top of my stomach.  He told me in order to perform the surgery my spleen had to be removed at the same time. To make matters worse I have stones in my Gallbladder, so my gallbladder most likely will have to be removed as well!!!!:(
My question is has anyone had their spleen removed and done the sleeve at the same time??
I am so worried....He said it is a complicated surgery..Should I just forget the sleeve?
Does one live a normal life without a spleen??
HELP!!!!

You can live without a spleen, but as its a major part of your immune system and would put you at high risk for illness and life threatening diseases, I'd be worried as to what is causing your spleen to be so large??  Perhaps have that looked at by a specialist before having it removed I'd be concerned.
Best of luck

I think the bigger question here is what's causing your splenomegaly. This could be a comorbidity of a number of other conditions. You should see a specialist to find out whats going on.

Thank you but my blood work tells me all is
normal. I had a ct scan and it shows only that it
us enlarged.  They also looked around it when theywent
in with the camera and said it had no cancer.
My blood count is perfectly fine. I guess its just how
I am made.

Maybe get a second or third opinion...i would try everything under the sun before losing the spleen unless there was an illness related reason that indicated that it must go. Same with the gall bladder. You are in Montreal, right? Are you self pay or going through the health care system? I would seek out Dr Gagner. Sometimes it is also surgical skill that enters into the picture...and he certainly has some skill! I am a week out today after surgery by him and I feel perfectly normal. And did not have to take pain meds since the morning after surgery.

Dr. Denis is from that same team.  They are
an amazing team. My concern is leaving such
a large spleen in me can also be worrisom.
It can rupture.  It is larger than an enlarged spleen.
