VSG if BMI<60

So, I haven't been on this forum for awhile. I have been following the Facebook pages. My journey has been full of delays and disappointments so I won't go into to. Suffice it to say, I have been categorically denied for the DS because my BMI is "only" 44 (I think). Most recently, my Internist at the local bariatric centre has redirected my file back to Toronto and told me that the VSG is till on the table if the surgeon approves. On Thursday I receives a call saying I have an appointment with the surgeon on May 3rd. I actually have two questions to put out there. The first, in my subject line, is if anyone around my BMI has had the sleeve approved. The unrelated question is that I will be having major jaw surgery on April 22nd and I'm hoping I will be able to travel (and talk, of course). Will that surgery be a factor in the decision?

I started with the same Bmi, and made it to goal no problem.  Not sure what to say as far as the jaw goes or Canandian insurance.  Vsg could work very well for you though.

My bmi was a bit higher than yours, and I was turned down for DS....my doc said it was for those who were more like 50 bmi, so it was kinda overkill, I was a "lightweight"..... that's fine...we went with sleeve and so far I am happy with it.  He explained the additional issues with DS....it just made sense.

sorry I don't know how Canadian insurance goes....as long as you have recovered from the jaw surgery and they think enough time has passed regarding anesthesia, I don't know why that should factor in.

good luck with everything, and esp the jaw surgery right now.

I believe it is definitely my best alternative to the DS. I just need to convince my surgeon.

To respond about your jaw surgery.  My bariatric surgeon said I needed to wait 2 - 3 weeks after surgery to remove a tumor before having bariatric surgery.  I don't know whether surgery on a bone vs soft tissue and I had would change that date or not.  Why not ask both surgeons and see what they say.

My maxillofacial surgeon has definitely recommended that his surgery take place before WLS because he said I will recover more quickly from his surgery. I have not had the opportunity to ask my bariatric surgeon because I haven't met him yet but I will definitely let him know it has taken place. I suspect it will still be obvious.

I would also ask your maxillofacial surgeon how long he thinks you should wait between surgeries.  Then when you meet the bariatric surgeon, you can get their opinion on waiting .....and compare their opinions.
