I don't feel it at all. My doctor told me the insertion might be more uncomfortable if you haven't had children because the cervix tends to be tighter. That's why they insert it while you're on your period - the cervix is a little more open. It was uncomfortable like menstrual cramps...nothing too painful.
My periods on the Mirena were fairly regular and reasonably light before my surgery. They lasted at least a week, but they did that before I got the IUD. I know of lots of women who stopped getting a period after getting the Mirena. Since my surgery two months ago, my cycle has been kind of screwy.

i LOVE my mirena, this is my 2nd one. The first one i have for 6.5 years (even though they expire after 5 yrs) i took it out to get pregnant with my now 18month old daughter, and got a new one put in when she turned 6 months. The mirena is carefree, set it and forget it lol i tried the copper IUD but i had too much cramping and heavy periods with that one.
