Pre-Op Liquid Diet and a few complications...
Hi All,
My surgery is scheduled for 24Apr... just a little bit away. I started the liquid diet on Saturday (3 bariatric advantage protein shakes) and 2 low sugar yogurts per day. Plus all the water I can handle... going for 48 -64 ounces. Aside from the righteous caffeine headache over the weekend from going cold turkey, it's not too bad. The first 3 days were really tough, missing the crunch/salty - but now I have a little issue. This may be gross to discuss but I don't know where else to go... Aside from always needing to pee, my poo is liquid. Is that normal? Has anyone who has been through this able to relate and can tell me? I'm a little concerned that this is a forewarning of things to come. I'll take any advice I can get... thanks!
Hi I also have vsg surgery scheduled for 4/25, I'm going into my 3rd week of the liquid diet and my bm has stayed the same for the most part & I've even felt a little constipated at 1 pt, but Benefiber cleared that rt up, not sure how others have fared.
I am scheduled for April 24th as well. I've been on protein drinks, liquids and a protein high dinner meal for 1 week and now on straight protein drinks and liquids for 1 week. I have the same problem. I drink a protein drink and within an hour I'm in the bathroom. And it's pretty much straight liquid. I don't have any advice of what we need to do. Guess I'm just going with the flow.
I was on a liquid diet for three weeks (Optifast) prior to surgery. I drank four shakes per day, along with SF popsicles, broth, decaf tea/coffee and we were allowed 20 extra calories per day.
At our centre, they told us to take 2 Metamucil capsules with each shake and we could increase that to up to 5 capsules as needed. By doing this, it helped 'solidify' things, so to speak. Metamucil helps with constipation or diarrhea so either way, Metamucil is your friend.
However, if I were you, before doing anything, I'd ask your surgeon or centre what they advise. I can only tell you what we were told and what personally worked wonders for me.
Wishing you luck in the liquid diet phase and your prep for April 24!
