Ugh! I am so disappointed in this whole process... I had the sleeve, gallbladder removal, and hernia repair on June, 30.  The morning I went in for surgery I weighed 240. When I left the next day I weighed 248.  I am so swollen and retaining so much water that my doc has me on water pills.  They are not helping much and I don't know where to turn after 20 days post op!  Has anyone else had this problem?  Any advice? Any help?  I am still very sore and finally after 18 days my drain sight stopped leaking.  It was having to be changes 5-6 times a day!

Have you been in touch with your surgeon?  How much liquid are you drinking every day?  How much protein are you getting?

I make my water goal daily. I try to make my protein goal also. I drink my shakes and I drink a lot of water. I will eat soft foods mostly refried beans or cottage cheese. I don't get much of that. The best is 4-5 teaspoons. I sometimes have sf jello or sf popsicles throughout the day. I can eat a full popsicle but not a full sf jello. Yes I have seen my surgeon twice and she never gives me an explanation for this.. She was more concerned about the drain sight.

It is normal to go up in weight due to the surgery -- you are pumped full of liquids.  What do you weigh now?

What are your water and protein goals?  Are you getting any exercise?

Give your body time to heal. The weight will soon come off. I had a rough start but it gets better. It took me almost three months to feel some what 'normal'. I wish you a speedy recovery!

Hang in there - you'll start losing soon.  I am 2 years, 2 months post VSG.  At 3 weeks out I posted here that VSG was the worst decision I ever made.  I was depressed, losing slowly, had a kidney stone, and a bunch of other stuff.  How quickly my tune changed within a couple weeks.  Just keep talking to your surgeon / follow up staff at the bariatric dept., keep drinking and eating on plan.  Your body is working very hard to heal from a triple whammy surgery, so be gentle with yourself.  Soon you'll be telling everyone VSG was the best thing you ever did!!

So, Sutterbos - looking back, would you voluntarily do it all over again?  I am scheduled for sleeve on next Monday and I keep asking myself if I am crazy.

You maybe crazy but that does not mean the Vsg is a bad choice.

I absolutely positively 100% without a second of hesitation would do it again.  There are rough patches, sure - there are with any huge life change.  But oh my gosh the benefits are amazing!!  The first time I flew and didn't need a seat belt extender, the first time I jogged up the stairs at work, the first time my shoes fell off because even my feet lost weight, the first time my co-worker didn't recognize me and was visibly startled when he looked down at my badge and realized who I was, getting off my 2 blood pressure meds and off the CPAP for sleep apnea, buying cute clothes in a "regular" store, and on and on.  There are 1000 different positives that FAR outweigh any of the negatives.

Yes, I lost about 1/3 of my hair for 6-9 months.  Yes I have to wear shape wear every day because I have loose skin.  Yes I've had a couple bouts of dumping syndrome.  Yes, at 2 years out it's harder because now it's not about "I can't eat that" but more about "I have to choose not to eat that".  But still the absolute BEST THING I'VE EVER DONE FOR MYSELF!!!!!!

Hang in there!  Your body has been through a lot and this has been a relatively short period of time. (Even though it feels like an eternity)  There are people that don't start seeing any progress until they are on solid foods.  You are probably getting close to the top of the hill and once you hit that peak it will hopefully be a downhill slide.  (I know --- stupid metaphor!)
