Sept 24 Exercise Report - What are you doing today?

It has been awhile since I posted one of these.  I took off Tues-Fri last week as I found out I had kidney stones and took it easy for a few days.  Saturday was the 5K.  I figured it was best to forget about my goals and just go slow.  I walked with some co-workers and we finished in 58 minutes.  Well below my usual pace but much faster than when I started.

Last night I did weights and walked/jogged 2 miles.  Mostly walked but did them in 31 minutes.

My goal of averaging 2 miles per day is now in jeopardy but still reachable.  If I was going to be home, no problem, but I am going to Fort Worth tomorrow for a wedding and may not have time every day for a walk.

Today I went for a walk in the am. I hoped it would help my headache but it didn't. :(

This evening I am going to the Y to lift weights. I am so self conscious when I'm using the barbell. I need to get over it but I feel like an imposter.

I love that you're lifting.  I wish more women would lift.  Do you have prior experience with free weights (barbells, dumbbells)?  If so, just go with what you know but go light and low rep.  In not, then the important thing is to keep it simple technique-wise to avoid injury.  Things like the shoulder (or military) press, kettlebell swings or air squats while holding a kettlebell, and deadlifts are all great places to start.  All of those should have youtube videos or google instructions regarding technique.

Don't worry about being an imposter.  All the dude-bros are more concerned with how vascular their forearms look in the mirror while doing bicep curls to worry about anyone around them.

I've been reading the New Rules for Lifting for Women (and also the men's version, because it goes into more depth on the various movements). Over the years (including for a year straight pre-op) I've worked out with trainers and have done a lot of work with dumbbells but not so much with barbells. My Y doesn't have a squat rack, just a Smith machine. Trainers often think I want to do low weight, high reps forever and ever. But I really don't. This is my second week back so I've hopefully gotten through the worst of the DOMS.

Today the plan is:

Deadlift with barbell

Dumbbell Shoulder press

Wide grip lat pulldown

Lunge

Swiss ball crunch

A woman's place is in the weight room!

I've officially made Wednesdays my "swim after work" day.  Hoping to go for an hour, but at least a minimum of 45 minutes.

I'm doing a lifting class at lunch and if things stay calm at work I might do the yoga class as well.

After work I might do some more yoga.  I was trying to set up a massage, but they were booked... boo!
