I was told to stay away from it for 1 month.  Coffee/caffeine can be dehydrating so you need to make sure you are able to get all your water/fluids in before you start drinking it again.  I started drinking it again a couple of months post-op.  Remember for every cup you drink you should try and drink an extra cup of water.  I now put cream and Splenda in my coffee.  Quit the sugar because of the carbs!  So No it doesn't have to be forever:)  I enjoy my cup of JO in the am. (French press..YUM!)

Yes, gave up coffee pre op  to avoid  caffeine headaches post op, you will be glad you did, they are brutal.  Once you are back to eating solid food and if you  do not have too much acid you can have a cup of coffee.  These are my instructions. I am just 2 months post op and am having a cup here and there, do not crave it too much.

I am on full liquids and called my NUT last week to see if I could have a cup of decaf. She said absolutely not and to stick to the plan she gave me. I guess my tummy isn't ready for it :(

As you can see, everyone is different when it comes to coffee.  Go with whatever your doctor/nutritionist recommend.

At first I stayed away from caffeine and only had black decaf.  After a while I started adding cream back in.  (I was never a sugar person).

Remember you want to avoid drinking calories whenever possible, so add up those creamer and sugar calories when you're tracking your daily food intake!

Unlike the posters above, I had zero interest in coffee after surgery.  I used to drink 1-2 cups/day.  Who knows, you may not want it??  :)

I drink what ever coffee I want.  I use my protein shakes as creamer.  The caffeine does not bother my stomach at all and I feel better all the way around when I have.  I hated the way I felt without caffeine and just couldn't do it.  I waited a while before I started to drink coffee,  I did let my stomach heal first.

My NUT told me that I could have decaf a few wks after surgery, but none of the real stuff for 3 months... It was hard, but I was able to wait til then.. I have one cup/mug per day.  I really dont crave it as much as I used to..

I gave up coffee for about 4-5 months. After that short time, I started drinking one cup every morning. Now, lets just say the folks at Starbucks (three local shops) know my name by heart. I know some friends that have had the sleeve that can't handle drinking coffee any more. For me, I have not had any issues. I usually put sugar free syrup and a little cream in my coffee. At Starbucks, I add the sugar free mocha and cream. My doctor knows that I drink coffee and he said to make sure I drink it in moderation. I'm sure his idea of moderation is a lot different than mine.

Follow your Dr's orders where caffeine is concerned.  Like many things, it may go into that "not today but later on..." category.  Here's what worked for me.  Started making the coffee a little weaker, then switched to one cup for a few days. No headache, so moved to about 1/2 cup, then stopped completely. Took about a week. What I missed most?  The ritual!  Yes, the prep time, the wonderful smell, the quiet moments all to myself in the early morning hours.  I've learned that my life is OK without coffee.  Treat: Sugar Free Coffee flavored syrup, a little 1/2 and 1/2 cream, cold water/ice and poof - a "iced coffee" that hits the spot.
