October 9 Exercise/Activity Report - What are you doing today?
Last night I coached my grandson's baseball practice for 2 hours. That would have been impossible 6 months ago. Now I am not even the heaviest coach on the field. I was not going to walk when I got home, but when I looked at my monthly walking report, I saw I was already aobut 4 miles behind goal and not walking would put me 6 miles behind goal. So, I decided to go walk 2 miles. Well, as I got into it, I felt better and eneded up walking 3.6 miles. And when I logged my miles, I realized I had the date wrong and I was not behind goal so now I am ahead! BTW, my goal is to average 2.25 miles per day.
Tonight will be a weight workout at the Y and walking 2 miles when I get home.
Exercise/activity is prescribed by your surgeon so get out there and take your medicine.
Personally, I did not start walking until 3 months after surgery. If you are just getting started, take it easy and build up slowly. It gets easier as the weight comes off. Also, if you are tired or not motivated, just tell yourself, I will walk for 5 minutes. You will be surprised how far you end up going. I prefer walking outdoors vs a treadmill. Treadmills are boring as heck even with a TV and too easy to quit. If you walk outside, once you walk out a mile, you have to walk back a mile. Or however far you think you can go. You cannot quit unless you call someone to pick you up and how embarrassing would that be?

I don't remember my doc prescribing exercise. I do it because I know it's good for my general overall health though. I loved the treadmill before I switched to outside. I love being outside now, though. I don't really think that trying to make people feel guilty for not exercising is useful. I think there are better ways to encourage. (I'm not saying you're trying to guilt people, but it could definitely be perceived that way.)
Today was my 5th to last pre-5k training day. My training involved walking, running, skipping and stretching. I did 1:17:12 for a total of 3.43 miles. I feel confident that I'll be able to complete my 5k within the hour time limit. Then I did 30 minutes of post-run yoga for stretching. Tonight I'll be doing my hour bhangra dance fitness class. Woo. :)

I use prescribed loosely. My surgeon and his staff strongly suggest exercise for long term success. Their experience is the patients who follow the food plan and exercise regularly, have the best success. Of course, that is true even without surgery. Vitamins are not prescribed but it is very important that people take them. Guilting people into exercising was the last thing on my mind.
I post these because Keith used to and reading them finally got me to moving.

Got up at 6 for a walk. I've been struggling to wake up in the morning and do this, but I'm usually glad I did. It's getting harder and harder now that it's so dark.
I was feeling worn out after work but I went to the gym anyway and feel better. This was my workout:
Deadlift
Step ups
Bench press
Shoulder press
Lat pull down
Swiss ball crunches
Our YMCA just got a squat rack, so I guess I can start doing my squats with a barbell...
