Trying to Decide Whether VGS is for me

Pray more, we'll be on the looser's bench together. my surgery date is Dec 3. I find your story very inspiring. I would always gain, then diet and workout and get back to my former weight, which was always a little heavier than the last. Couldn't really loose much in the last 5 years. I would never have had the surgery if I could have gotten down to 243. Now I wish I would have considered it when I was 243, instead of 255, 278, 290 and then, after the big diet, 310. So happy for you.

I was about your weight at the same age.   At age 22, I was 200lbs, overweight, but not too bad. Fast forward 30 years and I gained 5-10 lbs per year and I found myself at a high weight of 388.  I had doctors telling me 12 years ago I should consider WLS and I thought they were crazy.

At 7 months out, I am incredibly happy with my sleeve.

1.  I had a lot less surgical pain than I would have thought.  Recovery was very easy.  Now, for some people, this is not the case.

2.  The sleeve is really not that drastic of a surgery when compared to the bypass.  Yes, they cut out 80% of your stomach, but you still have a normal functioning stomach.

3.  My food choices are not that limited.  I can still bbq, I just cannot eat very much of it.

4.  Reading this board is great therapy and helps with day to day issues and other challenges.

5.  I think the really hard part of losing weight is just now starting, be sure to take FULL advantage of the 6 month honeymoon period.

6.  I can now walk/run 3-6 miles with no problem.

7.  I can ride a bike.

8.  Sitting in booths is not a problem.

9.  I was surprised at how quickly I got off my diabetic and bp pills.

At 280, you probably dont have some of these issues.  But, getting the sleeve now can help prevent that.

Also, at 280, you probably will not have the loose skin issues that gaining another 100lbs will cause.

Good luck with your decision.  When it comes to your health, I find you have to be a little selfish sometimes.
