This would be something that your eating plan from your doctor should give you insight about.

My plan doesn't involve calorie counting at all - just small meals, no snacks, and a protein goal.

My nutritionist determined my meal plan. Like Gwen stated, my meal plan doesn't count calories. Check with your Doctor.

My plan didn't count calories, but I did!  I found the calories increased over time from 500 per day early out, to about 800 a day for most of the first 6 months.  Then I found I needed more to feel satisfied, and I upped it to 1000 cals per day at around 9 months, and then after one year when I was starting to approach my goal I increased to 1200.  Now I'm maintaining at about 1500 cals per day.

I'd suggest keeping the both carbs and calories as low as you can while making your protein and water goals.

best wishes,

Carol

It is of my personal opinion that not counting calories is ridiculousness......Why would you want to eliminate such important tool and valuable data ??? Doesn't that make one bit of sense ???

Sure during the early part when everything is new and tight and motivation to do well is high.....Weight can dang near fall off.

Do your own research and follow "trends".... OH is a good place to see trends....

The peanut gallery will ask for medical documentation of case studies.... do that also if you want, I do and find flaws in that information as well.

WLS is not really about the WL...... WLS is more about keeping the weight off that you lost.

Maintenance is very much about caloric balance and watching the scale.

You have to wonder why a doctor wouldn't want to set the patient for the highest percentage of long term success?

Trending also for VSG are larger sleeves... larger sleeves mean more eventual capacity.... more capacity "can" mean more calories.

Also from what I've learned about food preparation is that calorie values can vary widely on how it is prepared and what ingredients are used.

Not asking anyone to agree with me..... do your homework.

I think you find if you stick to your doctor's protein goals (usually 60-80g per day) and carb goals (mine were 40g or less per day) that the calories will naturally take care of themselves.   Typically your total daily calories will be anywhere from 400-600 in the early days and then 700-800 after you've moved to solid food and are eating a bit more.
