24 hours!!! (Slightly TMI)

24 hours until I'm sleeved!! Can it be tomorrow please? I can't wait until I'm off this pre-op regimen of no over the counter meds...I'm sore, my allergies are going crazy, and I'm horribly backed up from all the extra protein I've been taking in (sorry for the TMI), and I can't do anything about any of those issues :(

Will the surgeon be able to do his thing if I'm constipated? Will they be able to give me something in the hospital to help?

EDIT: I didn't end up needing to do anything--the extra water and watermelon I had at breakfast and lunch did the trick as soon as I got home (thank goodness).

Please contact your surgeon's office about the constipation ASAP, they will likely recommend an approved stool softener or something prior to your surgery and ensure you get something after.  Check with them about Restoralax, it's a very gentle clear laxative you can take daily with water, and eventually coffee or tea. It does not irritate the colon/bowel - it just draws water into the intestine.

I take Restoralax daily since surgery to combat constipation - it can be an issue with the sleeve simply because of the lowered intake of fiber due to stomach size. Please don't wait until after surgery to tell them.

Will it work within the next 12 hours or so? I'm going to call them momentarily, and if they tell me to go get it, then I'll grab it as soon as I can--probably around noon.

I'm on a stool softener I already know protine binds me up and I didn't want to be constipated before surgery I also have milk of magnesia for after surgery I know some Dr say to use mirilax.  But I wouldn't take anything without speaking to your doctor's office first.  With Milk of magnisia you can become dehydrated so you have to be careful not to over do the laxatives.  The pain medications and anesthesia can make you constipated too.  Try to get a handle on it now otherwise your going to be really constipated worse.

Called my doctor, they rules that since I'm less than 24 hours from surgery, the only thing I can use is an enema. I'm debating the merits of it, as I've never used one before, but I'm currently really uncomfortable.

An enema might be a good choice at this point. I went 7 days without a BM after some surgery and needed 2 enema. And that was from the pain meds. The pain meds you get may clog you up even more, so if there's a way to clean yourself out beforehand, I'd take it. My opinion only, you have to decide how bad it is. If you've not pooped for a few days already...well...it can get worse.

That's kind of my thought. I'd rather give it a try and possibly have it work than not try and have it definitely get worse. I've just never used one before, so I'm worried it won't work at all.

I'm about to TMI you... If you do the enema go very, very slowly with the "fill" but try to get it all in. Use warm water. The longer you can hold it in the better. 15 mins at least. When you can wait no longer and finally get to the toilet if you can prop up your feet like on a little stool it helps things flow a bit easier. My urgent care doc said everyone should poop with their feet propped up as it creates a better angle for the bowel/rectum. Plan to sit on the toilet for a while and use moist flushable wipes if you have them. Your bum can get tender. Start this sooner rather than later as you may be expelling stuff for a while. Good luck!
