Post-Op VSGers: Downsides?

I was just approved for surgery by my LCSW, and now just need to fulfill my insurance requirement of 6 months of nutritionist appointments.

Recently, I watched my bariatic center's video detailing the before, during, and after of VSG, and the risks made me pretty anxious.

Have any of you had any of the risks occur? Are there any downsides you've experienced?

Sorry - I had no complications and absolutely no downsides for me. I picked a WL Center with great stats and I followed all the rules. Surgery was super easy for me (little discomfort and no nausea).

I am 6 months post op and have had zero issues I had a great doctor and hospital. I also had to wait 6 months. Use this time to build good habits and follow the pre op advice. Surgery was easy for me. 1 night in hospital. Virtually no pain. I did not take pain pills post op. I feel fantastic and have more energy than 10 years ago. Follow all the rules and go for it.

I had no complications. There are downsides. The process involves a high level of commitment. You will need to be vigilant and eat differently forever. You may get Gerd. You will find food tastes different or causes sensitivities. You may be easily tired, or weaker. You may have gall bladder or kidney stone issues.....

Or, other than being vigilant about using your new stomach to eat appropriately FOR LIFE, you may be fine. And probably will be.

I'm fine, I wish I could drink liquids easily as I used to do, since you have to drink a lot. And my muscles tire easily for some reason, still at two months out.

But I do not regret surgery, and I am losing weight and getting healthier. And if you ask people who are post op if they regret their surgery, almost nobody will say yes. Really, the upside is huge, and with little downside.

Just ask all the questions you have on this forum as it has an amazing community of people willing to help, and answer. I can't say thank you enough to Grim, Cathy, Gwen, and many more who have responded to my questions. And be sure if you are ready, that you trust yourself. You will get thru it.

The only complication I experienced was at maybe 3 months post-op when I started experiencing HUGE restriction all of a sudden. I talked to my surgeon about it and he put me on an anti-spasmodic for 7-10 days and I had to revert my diet. So I had to do 3 days full liquids, 3 days pureed foods, and 3 days soft foods before returning to my forever diet. This did the trick and I've never had a problem since.

I don't think I've experienced any down sides that I'd directly attribute to WLS. Buying new clothes gets expensive? Sometimes I feel a bit sad that I can't eat more than I can. It's sad that the surgery isn't a magic fix and that I've still got to see a therapist to fix my brain. But.. that's just life :)

Hm. I have been 1 week and 2 days now with huge restriction again. This all happened after I had anesthesia for that minor surgery. I've been really struggling to get in much solid food. I wonder if I should chat up my surgeon about it? I figured it might be hormonal after the anesthesia? It's weird stuff.

How far post-op are you now? From the minor surgery? It might be worth talking to your surgeon, especially if you can do it conveniently.

It was a week ago this past Friday. I've literally had the restriction since I started eating again after surgery. Funny enough though it seems like today I'm back to normal.

I had an easy surgery and recovery. Worst part was dislike of protein drinks. I just forced them down a bit at a time. I followed doctor's plan to the letter and am glad I did. Usually I try to find ways to get around rules but this time I didn't. Go for it. They have to tell you all the horrible ahead of time but not to worry. Diane S
