Facts about Fiber

Jul 27, 2010

The only fibers I know of are soluable which partially dissolves in water and insoluable which does not dissolve in water and therefore leaves the body intact. Soluable fiber does have a chemical change and therefore theoretically can add calories. However, how many calories if any is still an area of scientific debate.

Because soluble fiber is changed during fermentation, it could provide energy to the body. As of 2009 nutritionists have not reached a consensus on how much energy is actually absorbed, but some approximate around 2 Calories per gram of soluble fiber.

Regardless of the type of fiber, the body absorbs fewer than 4 Calories per gram of fiber, which can create inconsistencies for actual product nutrition labels. In some countries, fiber is not listed on nutrition labels, and is considered 0 Calories/gram when the food's total Calories are computed. In other countries all fiber must be listed, and is considered 4 Calories/gram when the food's total Calories are computed (because chemically fiber is a type of carbohydrate and other carbohydrates contribute 4 Calories per gram). In the US, soluble fiber must be counted as 4 Calories per gram, but insoluble fiber may be (and usually is) treated as 0 Calories per gram and not mentioned on the label. In the future the FDA may force manufacturers to list what kind of fiber on the food labels. I would suggest for everyone to learn what food has what fiber, then when looking at a label you will know, this food has oats in it, that means it is a soluable fiber food (actually the highest soluable fiber food) and many of your food bars have an oat base, Fiber One bars are a good example of that.

That being said soluable fiber is still very very beneficial to our bodies. It produces short chain fatty acids that help stabilyze blood sugar, lower cholesterol and seriously help your immune system. Your food choices for carbs should be the high fiber ones. So when you look at your carb intake for the day make sure half of your total carbs are from fiber, getting 20 to 30grams per day minimum for a healthy life.
