Gonna Start this thing

Nov 06, 2012

If I truly start this at the beginning then it must be way back when.  Let’s see if I can narrow it down to a date.

I started noticing I was fat when I was 40 (I am 51 now).  All of a sudden I looked in the mirror and said to my self…who is that.  Shocking…

The real eye opener was when I discovered I had sleep apnea.  Of course that came after being pulled over for sleeping behind the wheel of my Jeep on my way to work one morning.

It all came to a head when I needed to buy new summer clothes…size 20…(WOW where did that number come from…it was always a 16 before).

So… on an annual visit to my doctor for sleep apnea…and again increasing the air pressure of my bi-pap machine, my doctor suggested I look into Gastric Bypass surgery of some kind.  A few weeks of looking into this online I called my regular doctor (well Nurse Practitioner) to find out what she thought about this and she immediately thought it was a good idea.  Hummm…why didn’t she suggest it before then????

April 2011 - Referred to the local Bariatric Center, I called and made my first appointment.

Medical Issues:  BMI:  43.9    Weight 248    Height 5’ 3.5”   age 50  Morbid Obesity

Sleep Apnea, High blood pressure, Thyroid Issue, High Cholesterol, Acid Reflux, Vitamin D deficiency

Medical Insurance approval requirements and well as the centers requirements.

  1. Lose at least 10 pounds
  2. Psychiatric Evaluation
  3. Nutritional Evaluation
  4. Lots of blood testing
  5. Cardiovascular testing

ALL COMPLETED…ok…before being approved…which means I picked up the tab on all these tests as they were denied by my insurance company for not being pre-approved.

Finally got pre-approved for a surgery date of November 21, 2011.

Nov. 2011 – Cancelled surgery due to job change.  BOOO  HOOO  I need to change jobs and my start date was 11/21/11 (go figure).  So I needed to put off the surgery to make sure that my new health insurance will cover it…turns out yes it does…but now I have no vacation time…so two weeks out of work WITH OUT PAY.  Ouch…can’t do that.  So I wait…

Apr 2012 – Went to the Bariatric Center for a check in to get all this started again.  I still maintained my 10 lb weight loss…yea.  I am waiting for Nov/Dec 2012 time frame for surgery so that I may accrue some vacation and sick leave and also be covered under some benefits at work (FMLA and sick leave sharing) in case I am out for more that two weeks.  This is important so that I don’t lose any pay.

Meanwhile:

Sep 2012…OMG WTF happened to me…again…

I went to my regular doctor for my annual physical and stepped on the scale…that dumb thing registered:

260 lbs.  now my BMI is 46.1

AGAIN WTF…ok…I did eat what I wanted and stopped doing my 15-30 minutes a day walking…duh…what was supposed to happen…(I wonder).  OK so now I am back on the band wagon but I need to lose at least 20 lbs before they will put me on the surgery schedule.

So I start week 1 of losing on my own.
