I'm home :)

Dec 09, 2009

So, Monday was my surgery.  I got to the Surgical Center around 12:00, and had to sit there until about 2.  At this time, I'm called back, got into my gown and got my IV in.   45 minutes in the holding room and I'm telling my mom and husband that" I'll see them soon. "  My surgery didn't actually start until 3:45, I remember a lady calling my name for what seemed like forever and when I looked at the clock it was 7:00.    A little before 8:00 I was in my room.      When I woke up, I wasn't in pain, I just had a lot of "pressure" in my chest and I just breathed deep, because that's what felt best.  My mouth also felt like I had been licking sand, it was so dry.   When the CNA came by at 10:00, I asked her when I could walk.   She seemed surprised and told me that If I was ready  I could attempt it now.   I started at walking half way up the hall and back, as they suggested.   Every time I got up to pee, I would walk the floor around the nurses station and halls 3-4 times.   I didn't ask for pain medicine and around midnight or 1 am, the nurse came in and asked me if I was in pain.   I told her it wasn't that bad, but I would go ahead and get the medicine "just in case".  After I walked, I was given some ice chips, that was a little piece of heaven, I tell ya.   I was tired, but I couldn't sleep.  When I fell asleep, it was in 2 hour episodes then I was back awake.  It must have been being in a hospital, I dunno.

Tuesday morning rolls around and the new nurse comes in and tells me that "breakfast" will be here soon.   Apple juice, yummy.  So, I'm drinking 2 medicine cups of apple juice an hour, diluted with water, of course.  At this point, it may have well been Thanksgiving Dinner, I was stuffed after 2.     Lunch time rolls around and ...more apple juice.   The nurse comes in and says "They didn't give you broth? I'm gonna get you some!"   That broth was so good, I appreciated her doing that SO much.    The pressure had eased up a lot by Tuesday afternoon.    My husband spent the night with me Monday night, but he didn't get much sleep, and I felt good enough that I told him to go home for the night so he could rest.    I walked and sipped, watched Biggest Loser, walked some more.

By this morning (Weds) a dr. was making rounds and said I looked good, my incisions looked good and I'd be going home depending on what my surgeon said.    Well, Dr. F came through, I was standing up drinking some diluted juice and he was just like "WOW, you look great!" "Ready to go home!?"  Of course, I said "yes" and when he left, I walked the halls.   A younger doctor tells me on my 3rd lap to swing in to my room and he would remove the JP drain.  That was a feeling so weird!  It felt like a snake being pulled through me. Ugh.. just the memory of it.. LOL.  He laughed and cut up with me for a little bit and said that when my nutritionist came to see me, I could get discharged.    By this time, I'm so tired (didn't sleep well, again) so I'm dozing .   She came and told me that I could start puree'd food this coming Tuesday and I was ready to go .    The nurse came in and took my IV out and I was on my way.   I've been home since 11:30ish.  I'm feeling okay, but tiiiiiiired, doesn't even begin to cover it.   I'm glad to be home with my family and kids, I'm so thankful that the pain wasn't as much as I thought it would be.    In my head before surgery, I thought it was going to be terrible.  It isn't bad at all. Or..it hasn't been bad at all.  I'm knocking on wood that it keeps being like it has.     I'm pleasantly surprised. :)
