Surgeon Testimonial

John P. Maguire M.D.
I have chosen Dr. John Maguire to do my surgery. I will review him after my surgery, but I must say that he just did my mom's and he did a great job! He is very experienced and has been doing this for a long time.

Starting a new Journey

Only 6 days left until my surgery!
on October 15, 2008 10:11 am

Well, I have 6 days left. Nerves are staying quite calm, suprisingly.  I figured I'd be a basket case.  I think that happened a month ago.  I now feel calm and confident in my decision. I'm supposed to be on my 2 wk pre-op diet but not doing good with it. I figure I wouldn't need this surgery if I could do it on my own. Looking forward to this new beginning and getting healthy. My mom will be staying with me the first night at the hospital and then my family will be there daily for visiting. My little girl, Maddie wants to be there as well.  I was worried she'll be bored but I'm going to pack her a fun bag so she'll have lots to do and snacks when she needs them. Just getting prepared and doing lots of stuff around here to get ready for this big adjustment in our lives. This site has been so helpful to me.  I hope that anyone who goes thru this surgery finds this site to get the support that they'll need. OH and it's members are my lifeboat!

Last Pre-Op Appt.
on October 15, 2008 10:03 am

Went to my last Pre-Op appt. on 10-9. Everything looks good. He said, I should do fine. He put me on a 2-wk pre-op diet. I think it's just to get me used to eating small portions and drinking protein shakes and getting your fluids in. They took my pre-op photo. Yikes!  That's about it, pretty easy visit.

Had my EGD and pre op done!
on September 17, 2008 6:52 am
Well, I went and had the dreadful EGD done on Friday 9-12-08.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  I was awake during the whole procedure but kinda groggy feeling, but I remember the whole thing...I just remember him telling me to swollow, swollow, swollow and I remember lots of gagging.  Dr. Teel did my EGD and he was very polite and did a good job.  He said everything looked fine, so that's another hurdle I've jumped.

I had all my pre-op testing and education on Monday 9-15-08.  It lasted about 5-6 hours.  Didn't have to do the Upper GI since I had the EDG done.  Did a chest X-ray (turned out ok), an EKG, and lots of bloodwork.  Thank god I didn't have to have ABG's done. Wasn't looking forward to that. Spent alot of time filling out my living will and talking to the nutritionist and exercise therapist.  All in all, everything went smooth..doc wanted to compare my EKG to another EKG I had done a year ago just to make sure there were no changes, we'll see..hope I don't have to do another stress test.  But I wouldn't object because I'm glad they check you out so well before surgery, just to be safe.  Did try some different protein shake samples, I only liked one that was vanilla/cinnamon.

Now it's just a waiting game.  I see my surgeon on Oct. 9, 2008. and I think that's it before surgery.  Just wanted to update my profile.

This is my story...
on January 15, 2007 6:06 pm

I have been overweight most of my life, starting early on as a child.  I have continued to struggle with my weight every day.  I have been on every diet known, and none of them worked for me.  I did lose 75 pounds when I was 17, but I had to starve myself to do it and I gained every pound back plus about 100 more.  My family are all overweight except for my only sister, who wears a size 3... go figure.
I'm having the DS/BPD on  Oct 21.'08. My husband and I have a 6 year old daughter, so I have to get back in shape to be around for her and be more involved in her life.  My mom had the DS/BPD surgery with Dr. Maguire and he was terrific.  He is very experienced and has been doing this surgery a long time, which is why I'm choosing him to do mine. I am counting down the days until my surgery.  I can't wait to wear cute clothes and actually be able to shop at some more fashionable stores. I'm ready to regain my life back. Well, Anyways..I love this site, it is so informative. Goodbye for now.
