2 Years Post-Op

Apr 09, 2012

I had my 2-yr check-up about a week ago. Unfortunately, I have gained 10 lbs since I was last seen in the clinic last year. I have gotten lazy about recording my food intake and I am eating too many carbs. I still feel great but I know those pounds are creeping up on me. So, it's back to basics: I am recording everything I eat. I am amazed at just how many carbs I am eating!

When I saw my surgeon's PA, she commented that she had found that bypass patients have trouble around year 2 and again around year 5. She didn't say why, maybe she was just trying to make me feel better?

I also don't get sick when I eat sugar, like I used to. So of course, I have been eating desserts again. I do still vomit if i eat too fast. I still cannot tolerate too many raw foods such as cucumbers, celery, etc.  I still cannot tolerate any citrus or pickles, etc. Anything acidic just causes stomach pains. While I like corn, I can't eat too much of it or my stomach hurts.

My surgen is surprised I still need Prilosec but every time I treid to quit taking it, I got stomach pains.

15 Months Post-OP

Jun 23, 2011

I continue to lose weight. Before the surgery, I would have been happy to get to 150, although my goal was 145. My new goal is 130 and I am 5.5 lbs away! I am just thrilled with the results. Once I stopped eating Red Vines (red licorice) in April, I began to lose again.

It is still the best thing I ever did for myself and I would do it again in a heart-beat! I was so scared of this surgery for so long - we all hear the horror stories. The success stories are fewer, I guess because everyone likes a good disaster. My 2 friends who did it before me are also skinny and thrilled. One is 2.5 yrs out, no problems, the other is 2 yrs out, only problem was a bowel obstruction - but who knows if that was related or not, it was about 1.75 yrs later. I have had only 1 small ulcer that I brought on myself by taking my pills all together instead of spacing them out. I also had a minro surface infection in one incision which cleared up with antibiotics.

Don't be afraid of this! Research and get the best surgeon in your area, preferably one who does nothing but WLS.

One Year After Surgery

Mar 30, 2011

I have lost 99 pounds and dropped from a 3X to a 14/16. I no longer need any meds for high blood pressure (now 120/70), no longer need insulin (2 pills per day), no longer take my walker everywhere (but still some long distances as I have orthopedic issues), and can fit very comfortably into an airplane seat!

I saw someone today whom I hadn't seen since before Thanksgiving. She didn't recognize me until I spoke to her!

I now wear size 14 bottoms and size 16 tops (always had a big chest). I would like to lose another 15-20 lbs. But I am SOOO happy right now. It was the best thing I ever did for myself and I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Back On Track

Feb 02, 2011

I guess. I have been losing slowly but steadily. I don't feel hungry most of the time. My size 16 pants now feel comfortable, some brands even feel big. When I think that last year I was struggling to fit into 2X pants, I'm very happy.

I have a new breakfast: 8 oz skim milk, 1 scoop unjury unflavored protein, 1 cup frozen berry mix. Blended together, it's delicious. The berry mix contains blueberries (good antioxident), raspberries, and blackberries with no sugar added.  It's quite filling and tastes better than using a banana.

I am off all my high-blood pressure meds, no insulin, just a pill for diabetes. Haven'e had any asthma wheezing in over 1 year, and only need to use my walker if I am going to walk a long way (ortho problems).

All in all, I am EXTREMELY happy I had the surgery.

What I had not realized was that I had gradually crept up to eating between 1100-1200 cal/day. Once I went back to 800-900 cal/day, I began losing a little faster.

I am feeling great! I have so much energy, my skin looks great, people are constantly telling me I look like a new woman. Very flattering! I also had cataract surgery with an implanted lens so I don't need my glasses any more. Thus, I am wearing make-up, which I never bothered with (except for lip color) so I am taking more care of my appearance.  No doubt helps the "new woman"perception.

I am now 9.5 months out from surgery and soooo happy I did it.

Discouraged

Nov 13, 2010

I had to go back on insulin and I gained 5 lbs in 3 days. So discouraging since I went to all this trouble to lose. I am going to stop the insulin so I can continue to lose weight. I know I risk a stroke or heart problems, but I risk them anyway if I can't lose the weight I need to. Arrrgh!

Hit a Plateau

Oct 24, 2010

Very discouraging month. I doubt I've lost 5 lbs since my last month's check-up. I have started going to the pool another 2 days/week, for a total of 5 days per week. I know I wasn't getting enough exercise but now I'm not cutting the grass for the winter and it's supposed to snow tomorrow. So, the indoor pool it is. I bought another swim suit so I can wear a dry one each day!

Overall, I'm still pleased with my results, I walk so much better and I went from a size 3X to an 18. Some 16s even fit on the bottom. Maybe it's the weather getting my mood down!

6 months post-op

This was the best thing I ever did for myself! I have lost 73.5 lbs and feel great. I have another 35 lbs to go to be at goal. I used to need a 4-wheel walker to go any distance at all and now I rarely take it! Big improvement. I lived on Aleve twice/day and now rarely take Tylenol (doctor has forbidden any NSAID).

I did develop a "pill" ulcer after surgery, but then I was stupid and took all 3 of my pills at once. I'm sure one stuck to the side of my new stomach. I also had an EGD to be sure, but it was "just a small ulcer." I  sure don't want to have a big one, that was painful enough. I took Carafate and Pepcid for 2 or 3 months and it cleared up. I also take 3 pills/day instead of my former 7/day.

I still have trouble with chicken and lean beef, but fish and ground meat and fajita meat go down easily. I still avoid anything spicy or acidic because of the ulcer - just scared, I guess.
