I have a surgery date :-)

Jan 20, 2009

I am so excited.  I finally met with Dr White today and set my surgery date for Monday, March 2nd at 7:30 am.  Dr White is wonderful.  I was amazed at how much time he set aside to answer all my questions and fully explain the procedure.  I have to get scheduled for my upper GI, blood work, EKG and gallbladder ultrasound.   I am sure the next 40 days are going to fly by.

Surgeon Changed

Dec 17, 2008

Unfortunately, nothing went as planned from the moment I first met with Dr Duckett.  I met with one hurdle after another and I decided that I couldn't trust anything that I was being told.  It was excuse, after excuse, after excuse.... I was disappointed because I really wanted the band but afraid if they ever did get around to installing it that I would have problems getting fills.  My surgery was approved the same day they sent the letter on October 21st and I am not willing to wait until the middle of February to have surgery.  I have been mentally ready for this surgery for a long time and I am ready to get healthy now.  After much soul searching, I have decided to switch surgeon's from Dr. Duckett to Dr Patrick White.  Dr White only does RNY so I've decided that is what I need to do.  I am in the process of getting everything switched over to his office.  Will post more as I know more.

Time for Medication

Dec 02, 2008

Well folks I went to the family practice doctor to get some anti-depressants last week.  The not having a surgery date is killing me.  My anxiety is at an all time time high and I'm not sleeping.  The doctor decided that I needed to be on a mood enhancer.  I took those for a week but have been sleeping even less.  I started getting dizzy spells today so I called the doctor back.  She put me on Zoloft so hopefully that will even me out pretty soon.   In the mean time I am enjoying reading about everyone's success stories.   So take care and pray for me that they get it scheduled soon.  ~ Ally

Approved but on hold......

Nov 08, 2008

My insurance company approved my surgery on October 21, 2008.  I am excited but have no surgery date :-(   My insurance company wants me to have surgery at a hospital that does not have a bariatric program in place so there are issues with me seeing a lap-band nurse and dietitian.   I have been seeing a psychologist, Dr Kauffmann, since my pre-surgery evaluation.   She is awesome.  It is easy to relate to her and it's a bonus because she has had the surgery.  To date she has lost 200 pounds.  It's a relief to go to therapy and vent my frustrations.   I don't think the Dr or surgery coordinator understand how damaging it is on the mind to be approved for something but be up against a brick wall at the same time.  Obviously, I have issues or I wouldn't be where I am.    It seems to me that I am left blowing in the wind without a lot of options.  I did place some phone calls to the insurance company and the hospital about dietary counseling services but it is hard when there are not a lot of dietitians with lap band knowledge or training.  It also sucks that as the patient I am driving my medical care.  The hospitals all say that they are patient focused however it is apparent that all they really care about is the bottom line.
