Journey with WLS

Oct 19, 2010

Well, I am a little over 8 month out. This has been a great journey which I would not change even though I had some problems on this journey. These last 8 months, I have lived life the way life should be lived. I have been able and want to do more things than in the last decade or so. I have received so many up lifting words from family, friends, and co-workers.

Since mid August, I have had discomfort and pain in my abdominal area. This landed me in the hospital for 4 days then a month later I started to feel like I did the month before. I left work a few hours early and drove my self to the local hospital. They did blood work, took standard x-rays of my chest and abdominal area, and did another CT Scan which all were normal. They gave me some pain and nausea meds, sent me home, and told me to return if it got worse and to follow up in a few days with the general surgeon. I saw the surgeon a few days later who suggest that we could do exploratory surgery to see what is causing the pain or see if I have another episode. I left the office thinking what am I going to do. I do not want more surgery which would cause more scare tissue.
Well, after talking with my husband (Lenny), I was no closer to a decision. After a few days, I called my surgeon that did my WLS and made an appointment to see him. I took all my test results with me when I went to see Dr. Singh. After my visit, I felt the weights on my shoulders be lifted off. Dr. Singh took the weekend to look over everything and call me the following week with a plan of action. I am going to have a colonscopy done one day then the next day have diagnostics laposcopic surgery knowing that what they find wrong will be fixed. It is possible that my colon is twisted and part of it may need to be remove or there is scar tissue that need to be removed. I am schedule at the beginning of Nov to have this done.
Dr. Singh just makes me feel so much better about what is going on and the pain I am feeling. I have discomfort everyday in the same area and pain when ever someone presses down on the area.

On to other things. I did my part this month for Breast Cancer Awareness and had a mammogram done. It had been 8 years since my last one. Well, I had to go back and have follow-up images. I have had all the follow-up done that is needed and everything is fine. I will have to follow-up in 6 months with another mammogram and/or sonogram.

The weight lost is going good. I am still losing and getting closer to my final goal. I am 8.2 lbs away from losing 100 lbs. I can not wait to reach this milestone on this great journey. Lenny co-worker had LS done last week and is doing great from what I hear.

Well, time to go. Will write more after my surgery next month.

Just letting everybody know how I'm doing

Sep 17, 2010

This is a secret between who ever read this and me. Its been a month since I last wrote. Thing were going great until the week of Aug 22.

On Sunday, Aug 22, I started getting abdominal pain around 1am at work. The pain was on my right side that started near my belly button. By 4 or 5am, the pain moved away from my belly button but had increased 10 times. I all most called the Sergeant to call 911 but I was getting off in 2 hours. I stayed at work until 7am in a lot of pain. As long as I did not move, the pain eased little. Every time I would stand or sit down the pain got worse. I could hardly walk.
I met my husband, who took me to Patient First who thought I had an appendicitis. I went to the local hospital where they did a CAT scan. I had to drink 64oz of this nasty stuff before doing the CAT scan. Well, they could not see my appendicit due to my bowels were inflammed. I was admitted to the hospital for 4 days. While I was there I had a bowel scan done. They said I had partial bowel obstruction or the lower part of my colon twisted.
This may or may not ever happen again and it could happen to anybody, not just someone who has WLS.

Labor Day weekend was nice. My parents, daughter, and I went to Kenyon College to visit. We did so much walking but I was up for it, no problems.

Well that is it for now.

6 months post op

Aug 11, 2010

Monday, Aug 9 was my 6 month since having RNY. The weekend was very eventful. First it was my daughter 16th birthday and my husband had family come in from OH, FL, and KY who we have not seen since last June at our nephew graduation from high school. The family has been following me on face-book but could not believe their eyes when they saw me on Friday. Everybody said I looked great and my 19 year old nephew told me to keep up the great work and I looked good when he hugged me good-bye on Sunday.

I was not embarrass for my daughter at her birthday party with all her friends. Even some of her friends told her that I looked good. I ate my first little piece of cake at the party (no dumping but my stomach upset a little). It tasted OK. I loved choc birthday cake in the past.

This past 6 months have been great. I have the support of all family members near and far, plus support from friends and co-workers. Having the surgery was the best medical decision I ever made). My life can only get better as I continue to work towards my weight lose goal.

Not only has my health improved but my emotional health has improved too. I have been married 18 years this past Feb and I feel like I am on a second romance with my husband.

Can not wait to see what the next 6 months bring me.
