Had My 1st Visit to Surgeon

Feb 18, 2008

I got a friend to drive me as I was a bit freaked about travelling on two buse and my "open" incision. We actually had an enjoyable time chattingh on the way there and when I was in at the doc's she read her Tehillim (Psalms).
The doc was not impressed with my "wound" as to him it is within norms but he ub=nderstood my fears. It is still open and will take time to heal shut. At least now I can get it wer-yeah, I can shower and then put a dry gauze on it. I did that tonight it and it is "leaky".
I have another appointment in two weeks.
I now weigh 99K on his office scale and when I first met with him mid-September, I weighed 106K. But he is very laid back about everything. Maybe because this is my 3rd op and "revisions" sometimes lose slower.
I actually started eating on Shabbat-/Saturday - a few days earlier than what the dietician said. I had small amounts of cottage cheese. I really wanted Bamba(an Israeli PB and corn flavored snack but held myself back.
And there was my fiasco on Saturday night whioch I thought I wouldn't even mention to the doc but it slipped out.
I want to start EXERCISE but as walking is the advised mode, I ain't going to do it in the rain and jeapordize the health of my ankle.
Everything in the right time.

I Am Home From The Hospital

Feb 13, 2008

I was admitted to the hospital on the 1st and stayed as I don't drive and don't have money to pay for so many trips.
My daughter showed up Saturday evening to be with me and stayed until that Wed.
My op was 3rd of February. I got home on the 12th. The ride exhausted me. 2 friends carried all my belongings for me. and I went to sit at my computer.
The op went well although the adhesions were very difficult. The surgeon was able to RNY me and 80cm. I had 2 drainage tubes. And as my veins are very unco-operative, during my op a central vein in my neck was used. It lasted until Wed morn before it got clogged and needed to be removed and a new vein found. What an ordeal!
The day before my release 1 drain was removed and the next day the other and it was a bit pussy. Also all 36 staples were removed as well.
Back to my "homecoming"....
Shortly after I was home I wanted to change the gauze where the pussy drain had been. My hand brushed against the fresh scar awhere my "not belly-button" is and it opened and bled. Needless to say, I freaked out calling my HMO asking for a home visit but that was a no-go. I had to call a taxi and go to to the other clinic before they closed. The doc on call did his job but was not very sympathetic to my situation of fear or that I live alone. He said it was "non-sense" and sent me to the nurse for dressings. The next morning I went to my GP and he and his nurse properly examined me against further damage. the places where the drains were need to be changed daily but the scar-opening should not get wet and I should leave its bandage alone for a week.
My 1st appointment with my surgeon is next Monday.
I weighed 101K at admission and yesterday at my GP I weighed 98.

Cheating a Little Each Day....

Jan 24, 2008

I allow myself one "cheat" each day. Usually it is a "child-ren's" ice cream on a stick, called MilkTime. But today I had a bag of potato chips. Man were they good!
Otherwise I have been having 1% milk and protein podwer; Rivyon (Israeli buttermilk) with protein powder; diet yogurt; diet pudding; and chicken soup (only the broth aside from the 1st day I got the soup) from a friend.
Just the thought of not being able to eat is emotionally a loss.I miss not eating - taste and texture. And junk-food.
Food is my friend and food is my enemy. I have to live with that reality.

I Started My Liquid Protein Diet

Jan 19, 2008

So I can eat 1% milk with my protein powder. I bought the Whey Protein TSL (dulce, choco-vanilla, and ice caffe latte). I must have a variety!
I can eat diet yogurts and diet puddings and soup broth. I don't care for jello.
I live alone and don't feel like making a soup to throw out, so I have sent out emails requesting leftover broth from people's Shabbat. Some people had eaten out and as such did not cook. Oh, well!

I HAVE A DATE

Jan 08, 2008

  I have a date!
When I saw the surgeon yesterday, his secretary was not in, so he had to look in the surgery calendar. Every page seemed full all the way thru to April. He flipped pages back and came to an empty one - February 3rd. I go into the hospital on Friday, the 1st of February.
       It must be G-D's Will.
       Now I can be nervous.
And I still didn't hear back from the other two hospitals that I had been to.

I Met Again with the Surgeon in Tiberias

Jan 06, 2008

Today I travelled on 2 buses to get from my home to the hospital in Tiberias. I got there early for my appointment with the doc in his office, not his clinic.
We talked for fifteen minutes (last week I met with the anestheologist) and as his secretary was out, he looked in the calendar for surgery dates. All booked until March-April. And then he noticed an opening for the 3rd of February. I hope it is not a mistake. What if he really has a medical convention and forgot to write it in the book?
When I get the paperwork in the mail with the date on it, I can go to my GP and HMO to arrange financial coverage.
After I left his office I realized that now I am nervous!

Two Hospitals in One Week !

Jan 03, 2008

This week I was at Tel HaShomer Hospital to see the female surgeon (there aren't many of us ladies in the field). As she speaks a good English (she claims she learned her English via the Beatles) I felt very at ease with her.
While I was meeting with her, her surgeon-partner also joined us. I realize I am a "surgeon's nightmare" due to the riska involved in any abdominal op on me. And yet I am concerned if nothing is done.
Dr. Feigin wants to do a gastro-gastrostomy(reconnect the esophagus to stomach to avoid/eliminate the GERD);as opposed to doing the RNY. If she sees she can do the RNY, she will. The planned date would be mid-FEb.
I was at another hospital closer to home (in Tiberias) to meet with the anesthiologist in preparation for the op but no date as of yet. I have a meeting with the surgeon (Dr. Giron) there on Monday of next week at 1pm after his clinic hours.
At this point I have 2 places to choose from but I'll know more after I meet with Dr. Giron.

I'm Tired of the Waiting Game

Dec 26, 2007

As I read others posts (on this site as well as the Hebrew one) and see many people already having their op. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever have my revision, and with it a releif from the GERD.
Next week are my 2 appointments so I hope I won't be too depressed before I'm even given a chance for a "pain-free" life.
Tomorrow I have a dental appointment as two different molar teeth have been bothering me - one on the bottom left and one on the top right. I hope the financial aspect of seeing the dentist won't cause me a heart attack -LOL.

And the Oddyesy Continues....

Dec 19, 2007

Well, my oddysey continues. Today I was in Tel Aviv. The doc was nice and agreed to do the op but I have no idea when as I have to wait for a phone call from the Medical Secretary which could take a month and she would tell me when to come for an appointment to see the anestheolgist with all my medical papers of tests and procedures and then I would get called for a date for surgery. However that could be 2 weeks after the 1st call before I see the anestheologist and 2 months before a call about when surgery.
This hospital and docs in TA are very skilled and "popualar" and as such there is a long waiting list and they also deal with cancer patients and emergency cases of G-D Forbid bombing and explosions.
I'm glad I'm keeping my other appointments - one in a different hospital in TA the 1st of January and another in Tiberias.
If I have to I will go thru the list of the other 10 docs until I find one skilled enough to take me on.
I have not and will not give up on me!

The Search for a Surgeon Continues:

Dec 13, 2007

Next week I have another appointment at a hospital in Tel Aviv and in January I have 2 appointments with 2 different surgeons.I'll just keep going down the list until I find a surgeon willing to take my case. There are still 6 more I can see until I'll seriously have to consider travellimg to the U.S.
I know there are very real risks involved with any abdominal surgery on me due to all the previous ops. But what am I supposed to do with the way the severe GERD is affecting my sleep.
Do the risks of surgery outweigh its benefits?
