Coke Update

Oct 12, 2008

UPDATE- When I have good news I always like to let you all know also. I am over 2 months off Coke, when I saw the Dr. last month my A1C had already dropped one full percentage point. My morning glucose readings are between 75-90 and my weight is moderating within 2 lbs. I am not saying this to brag, but we all make different commitments to ourselves, you all have made a huge commitment in your journey in weight loss surgery and I an so proud of each one of you. My point of telling you this story, is whether you loose 1lb or can breath better, or walk better, that is better that you were 1 year ago today. I like to pat my self on the back (my ego can get a little big), you should all do the same each and every day.  Remember that old song "Give it your best, don't let anybody (including yourself) tell you you can't do it. Best of luck, see you soon.

One Degree does make a difference

Oct 12, 2008

This was originally e-mailed to members of our group but I thought that it would be to share it here as well.

It is sometimes hard to keep up the momentum on losing weight either while you are waiting on your first fill for lapbanders or further down the road after you have had some time and have slipped into those bad habits.     The most important thing to remember is that you are doing this to change our life.   If you wanted to stay fat you would not have bothered.   You wanted this change and you have to work at it.   Your surgery is a tool and it has to be used properly to get those results.   To do this, you have to:
  1. Follow the dietary guidelines your doctor set for you.   If it is low carb, you need to read labels and keep track of your carbs.   No chocolate is not low carb, never has been regardless of the size.   Do you want to win or are you going to let the chocolate win?
  2. Drink Drink Drink...Water is so important to maintaining you body.  It keeps the blood moving, it removed toxins from your body.   Like air, it is a necessity.
  3. Exercize...If you are obese, excersize alone probably will not decrease your weight, however, exercize is important to burn energy, flush your body (so you can drink more water) and it helps maintain and build muscles.   If you have been severely obese, you probably have not been very active, you need to turn that around.   Even limited walking will make a difference.
  4. When you get down about something, pick yourself up.   DO NOT fall into old habits of using food for comfort.   Comfort from food equals less success.   Go walk or drink water, call a friend, blog or diary you thought and feels as you go through this.

We are in this together.   Those of you who have kept up with me know that I have been struggling.  I too have to make use of my tool and make sure I am doing my part.

Here is a link to an awesome little movie.   Please take a moment to view it and understand that that like extra push, that extra step is going to make a difference.  Paste the URL into your browser to view

It's your life, you're responsible for the results         http://www.212movie.com/     I hope you have enjoyed this.   Please feel free to share it with others because this is about giving a little extra in everything we do.   We can make a difference.   We just have to go that extra degree.

Thought for today - from Melissa although posted under Ira's lo

Sep 26, 2008

I will be patient in steadily working toward my goal, remembering that all good comes in time.

Melissa's thoughts - We did not get to our highest weight overnight.   for me it took years and years of inaction and bad eating habits.

I cannot lose it overnight, but there is something else here to think about.   Although it took years and years to put on, I can lose it consistantly and a lot of people can get to their goal in 18 months.  I am only 65 lbs from my goal, November will be one year.   At my third fill, I lost 15 lbs in one month, because I did what I needed to do.  If I have 4 more months where I work hard...I can be at my goal by 14 months out.

I did not get to 300 lbs overnight and I cannot lose it all overnight, but if I am patient in steadily working toward my goal, remembering that all good comes in time, I WILL be able to lose it in MONTHS NOT YEARS!

Chin up...Keep your eye on your Goal!

Need you support and prayers

Aug 08, 2008

Hi everyone. The other day Melissa was diagnosed with Histoplasmosis, which is causing fluid to build up behind her Retina. In order for this to be corrected she will have to undergo a series of injections into her eye. The medication used is also used to treat Colorectal Cancer. This process takes a few months to take care of as the shots are given every 5 weeks. My reason for this posting is to ask all of you for your special prayers for Melissa.  This is very stressful for both of us but we are strong and have a strong faith that God will get us through this. Thank you for allowing me to ask you for any support you can give Melissa.

I am jealous of Melissa!

Jul 21, 2008

I guess I am jealous (lol). About 3 weeks ago Melissa was looking at me (poor thing) and said what is that lump in your stomach. When we looked further it looked like a hernia, so being the paranoid man that I am I ran to the doctor in panic. He said yes it is a lingual (belly button) hernia and has to be repaired. So Friday I met the surgeon and he said yes let’s repair it. To finally get to the point here he said they do it laproscopiclly, so therefore that now means that Melissa and I can play connect the dots (LOL). Now I told her that I will need a lot of care, she said I had my Lap-Band done and was up walking in a few hours and so will you. I guess I am in real trouble. See you all on the other side of the anesthesia!!Ira

I made it through training, Yeah!!!

Jul 13, 2008

I made it, I went through the training course and I am now a Support Group Leader and it is an honor to join Melissa with this group. Supporting people who have gone through WLS of any type is a passion for me. I see the difference first hand in people who have someone to support them, lead them, hold their hand and even cry with them. This cannot be an easy road for any one, and a little push once in a while goes a long way. It will be my pleasure to join with you in your journey and to be here for any of you who need me. Also if you have someone who you would like to talk to me about helping you, please have them contact me. As Melissa has said I have a different perspective of the surgery and would love to share it.

OMG 15 LBS IN 4 WEEKS.. I LOVE HER SOO MUCH..

Jun 28, 2008

OMG- She has really done it this month. Melissa after getting a fill 4 weeks ago has lost 15.3 lbs. I am so happy, I can see how much more motivated seeing this number than when she has a few months of low losses. Being a support group leader and now working to become a Life Coach propels her further into her passion for public speaking. She impresses me so much her love for me, our girls and my mom grows as she shows this by the care for her health, proved through her strength in losing weight. I know that I sound like a broken record but I am so proud of her and of any person who can make this type of a life changing decision. As the great Dr. Rehnke says “You didn’t gain it in a day and you won’t loose it in a day”. But 15.3 in 4 weeks WOW. I just love her so much and ask God to keep her on this track towards continued health.
