Surgery Day - October 8, 2007

Oct 29, 2007

6 a.m.
Got up around 6a.m. in the morning.  I live in the Dayton area so I had a nice hour long drive to sit through. It was really starting to hit me that I had actually went through the whole process in about three months and now entrusted my life to a doctor I had only seen a few times.

There is no escape now....  My husband Bob was sweet and took my bags and CPAP machine the car and I move quickly to the driver's seat.  Nothing like rush hour through Cincinnati to keep your mind off someone getting ready to poke holes in your stomach.

9 a.m.
After dodging about twenty UC students who continuously darted out in front of traffic on the way to class; I arrive at the Valet parking site for Deconess Hospital.  I grabbed my cpap machine for sleep apnea and the attendant took off in my car.  I was hoping to find registration on the 7th floor and would have a long wait on the elevator but no luck-registration is on the right, by the info desk.  There are a few people there and not many people working so I thought I would  have a few moments to wait and comtemplate what I was about to have done.

Luck was not on my side, out of a side door behind the desks is a fresh worker and I was the first person for him today. We sat down and he started asking the standard questions that was I believe info for them to verify and half competency test.  He then went throught those wonderful questions you don't really don't want to think about when you are about to have surgery like do have a living will and if would I like to have someone come down and draw a living will and a will before surgery.   Also my favorite-if  you were to have heart failure would you want to be recesitated?

After the heartwarming conversation I had with the man, I was given some paperwork and sent to the surgery floor.  Off the elevator was a long hall with no one around.  Well maybe they decided not to come in today because it is Columbus day and I am sure they would want to celebrate the day by shopping at local malls.  I quickly turned around told my husband they must not be in when a voice came out of the office.

Out came my nurse who began to ask me all over the questions I had downstairs and some others like a oral and rectal swab which I was not interested in having today.  It was so strange, I have been blessed with good heath despite the diabetes, hypertension and acid reflux.  I have never been in a hospital for myself since my birth.  Never had I been on the hospital bed.
All probed, drawn and gowned up, they allowed my family came in for their goodbyes.  Isn't funny when you are about to have surgery to help give you a longer and better life everyone around you is all sober and want to tell you nice things about how they feel.  Well I did not get that.  My husband Bob was taking pictures of me in my hot new gown and shower cap.    He had my wedding ring which I have not taken off in nine years in his pocket. A strange look was on his face like he was wondering where were the local pawn shops in case anything went wrong.

I talked to a few more staff and doctors then Dr. Curry came and asked if I had any questions before surgery.  What do you ask a man who is about to take probes into your body and manuver a high price rubber band around your gut?  I came up with nothing so I just blurted out "Make sure you do a good job."  He said "For you, nothing but the best."  The drugs must have been kicking in because I was getting so relaxed by his words.

Sometime that day

I became very light headed but everything was very cool.  I was flying on my magic carpet down the hall and saw my family sideways and waved goodbye to them. Or I least I made the attempt in my mind.  After that I went down the hallway, around the corner and into the bright lights.

No, not heaven but into a very cold

Surgery Date Change 10/2/07

Oct 02, 2007

I have changed my date of surgery and it will be on October 8.  I guess UHC did not renew the contract with Jewish Hospital out of CIncinnati and now I must move over to Deconess.  Yippee!

I have to say I am starting to get nervous.  All the dangers of surgery, will I lose all the weight I need to, all the silly fears.  I just can not believe it has been this easy.  I hope it keeps going this way.

Surgery Approved! -9/5/7

Sep 05, 2007

I got a letter and a phone call today from Dr. Curry's office.  Looks like I am approved for surgery and we actually set up a date.  It is so surreal.  At first I was surprised and I have to admit, later in the day I started to think of all the resturants I have to before I go  on the Medifast diet LOL!

Must be strong, I have to lose weight before the surgery not gain.  I think once I go to the nutrition class I will be fine.
