Introduction To My Weight Loss Journey | May 2012

May 30, 2012

Hi Everyone! (Deep Breath...) "Well, here we go!"

This officially marks my first weight loss blog and I'm happy to be able to share this with all of you. I presumed this would come easy for me because I'm no stranger to the blogging world. As a Realtor with Keller Williams VIP Properties (one of Southern California's leading real estate firms featured on HGTV), I've written dozens of blogs over the past three years. Everything concerning the national housing market and local market trends that have been affecting everyone from major lenders, mortgage securities, real estate agents, foreign investors, distressed homeowners, first time buyers and short sellers. Some of my work can be seen on Trulia.com, Zillow.com, LinkedIn.com, MerchantCircle.com, OurWeekly Newspaper and more. As I set out to create this blog, I quickly realized how challenging and sometimes vulnerable it can feel to open up about our own personal trials and tribulations. So I'm going to face whatever fears that may exist underneath the surface and I hereby give myself the freedom to explore and share my very own personal experiences you.

My Why:

Like many of you, I've come to rely on so many public online forums to help self-educate myself about bariatric surgery while learning from other's shared experiences. Not to mention, I've become a huge fan of YouTube video documentaries. In fact, so many people have helped changed the lives of thousands of people all over America just by recording weekly videos regarding their own weight loss testimony. This new wave of video blog has definately impacted my decision to move forward with my surgery. Therefore, over the next few weeks I too plan on joining in and documenting as much as I can for others to follow. If I can be a vessel or an inspiration to anyone, I would only be returning the gift I once received.

My Story:

After I had my son in 2007, the weight just continued to escalate over the years. In fact I weighed more today than I did with my son at delivery! Now, I wasn't always over weight. As a child, I was skinny. It wasn't until my freshman year of high school that I started to filling out. Even then, I carried it well. As a young adult in my early 20's, the extra pounds became excessive pounds. It's only within the last five years that I soon I realized how unhappy I was with what I saw in the mirror. That's when I knew it was time to take control over the one thing I could control... Me. So I've spent the last two years considering the idea of going under the knife and I began to research the different options, I grew more and more confident about my decision to move ahead with the gastric bypass or gastric sleeve procedure. So, last year I spoke with my primary care doctor and obtained his immediate support. As a Kaiser Permanente Medical patient, I agreed to attended a twelve week (one day per week) Options Class. I loved this class! It was a like having a one hour therapy session with people who shared the same frustrations about having a unhealthy and unsuccessful relationship with food as I did. It was also a place to learn ways to overcome all those issues with or without the aid of surgery. I could go on and on about the benefits of having a support group or support system in place, but I will try and save that for another blog.. Lol

Encouraging Words:

I would like to take a brief moment to strongly encourage anyone who is truly considering this surgery or simply struggling with weight loss to find a support group or health education class at their local clinic or hopital because it will help you in so many ways. By the way, most of hese classes are readily available to anyone and best of all, it's FREE! It's not the type of environment that makes you feel ashamed or burdened by what hasn't worked for you. Instead you feel a sense of accountability that comes with a positive reassurance that you too can change and have the lifestyle you crave. Give it a try! After all, you truly won't have anything to loose, but the weight loss you deserve.

My Journey Begins:

Today, I've now completed all of the necessary blood work, psych evalutation and all other required physical exams. On May 23rd, I scheduled my first consultation with my surgeon (and best doctor ever!)..Dr. John Yadegar.. At the consultation, I weighed in at 290.6 lbs!! Yay!!! This was great news because I slimmed down 13 lbs. just 2 week shy of my last and highest weigh in of 303.4 lbs.

Side Bar: How To Lose 15 lbs in 2 Weeks?

I simply cut off all fast food, no restaurant foods, no sodas, no caffine (especially Starbucks & Mc Donalds), no breads (unless 100% multi-grain thins), no eggs (only egg whites), no white rice (switched to brown rice), no cereal of any kind, no milk (only 8th Continent Soy Milk), no eating after 8 pm and I added my 100% Whey Protein Isolates two hours before breakfast, switched to lean meats (mostly turkey, chicken and fish). Also, drink 64 oz of water daily (Crystal light is my best friend), track your calorie intake using SparkPeople.com (I stayed under 1800 calories a day) and I did at least 30 minutes of heart pumping cardio on my indoor stationary bike 4 times a week... That's it!! It worked!

So... after careful consideration, I have choosen the Gastric Sleeve VSG procedure and my surgery date scheduled for July 3, 2012!!! I'm super excited and I can't wait to share every milestone, every struggle, every few pounds lost and all other exciting events to come!
Good luck & God bless all of you!
