Goals and weight loss

Dec 16, 2009

One of the things I've been evaluating for myself lately is what "goals" mean in weight loss.  I've not been obsessing on having to reach a specific number (and not sure why) and have been asking myself what "successing" really means?

Yes, I would like to lose another 15 - 20 pounds.  Realistically, part of that will be flesh-weight that can only be addressed by plastic surgery, so that part may never come off, as I don't see myself affording it at any point in the foreseeable future.

So I have to ask myself - if I were to stay the weight I am today, would I consider myself a failure for not losing any more?  And honestly, part of me would say "yes" (the critical, "you're still a fattie" part) and part of me would say "hell, no" (the part that can see what I've accomplished and am accomplishing).

Looking at everything in balance, my goals are to become more toned and to lose more inches, which will happen as fat to muscle conversion continues.  But I'm already feeling "hardened" in my body - much less flabby fat in various places and I can feel/see the muscles close to the skin and becoming toned.  So that goal is well on its way.

My other goals are to increase my fitness level.  Some of that is taking on new challenges (hopefully a spring zip-line tour!  Pam's "PNC run"!  Running an official 5K!) and having new experiences.  Another part of it is just continuing to feel good and to build exercise of some type into my everyday routine.  That's also a goal that's on its way.

So as I look back over the last 8 months, I can clearly see a pattern of success...
* 93 pounds of fat GONE (forever!),
* eating habits and preferences revamped completely,
* a new dedication to cooking and bringing healthy foods into my home,
* exercise and body toning incorporated into my life,
* a new outlook that incorporates "dressing up" daily as part of my self-respect routine (instead of hiding from the world)
* new and much healthier physical test results - cholesterol and triglycerides, BP, sleep apnea, etc.

My goals.... my life.
