Let's see alittle about me...
My issues with weight really began when I was small. At that time I was too thin. My family jokes that if I sat down at lunch with a drumstick and some veggies, 2 hrs later I would still have 1/2 drumstick and most of the veggies. My mom and grandmom really went out of their way to find ways to make me eat! Unfortunately by the time I hit my teens I had developed a love of Good foods. My mom is an amazing cook (something I did not inherit) so there was no lack of high fat, high calorie, down home cooking in our house!! I developed an unnatural relationship with fruit pies (apple, blueberry, peach, sweet potato, etc) that I was able carry well into adulthood! I clearly remember being in high school and going to the mall to get boots and my calves were too fat to fit any of the stylish knee boots that I wanted. I had to get riding boots because they had a wider calf...EVEN IF I COULD HAVE HOISTED MY BULK UP ON A HORSE, THE POOR HORSE WOULD HAVE DIED OF STRESS TO JUST TO SEE ME COMING!!
I was diagnosed with diabetes in my late 20s but was never truly able to cut out my favorite foods. I would go weeks on a healthy diet and then make the fatal decision to just have 1 Krispy Kreme donut (because the hot sign was on). That usually started a quick spiral into eating every bad thing I could find!!
My decision to have WLS came a couple of wake up moments. First I was put on Insulin in addition to the 9 other meds I took. Then I got tired of trying to find clothes. I would go in the store and the "regular" size department would have a huge selection of styles and colors but I'd have to move pass that selection to the dowdy ugly clothes in the "Women's" section. But really the epiphany came as I was cleaning the kitchen and truly looked at the fact that I had fancy EXPENSIVE cookware that had never been used. When I told my son I was going to fix dinner he would go get his coat and shoes because it our house that was code for going out!!
I had surgery on Sept 26, 2006 and I have not looked back. I have cut my long standing relationship with pie and I'm feeling GREAT. No insulin, No diabetes meds, and I am actually using the gym membership that I have religiously kept up for the last 2 years!!
