Day 25 Post OP..

It's been a journey, and one that I would do all over again.  I'm writing this for me (so when I look back in a year, I'll appreciate what I've been through) and for others as inspiration.  I had toyed with the idea of RNY for about 3-4 years, well since they diagnosed me with diabetes in 2005.  Diabetes is on both sides of my family and my sweet sister has it so bad, I want to cry for her some times.  She is in constant pain, (neuropathy in her feet and legs, she is on morphine and has a permanent Stim in her back to help).  She has numerous stints in her legs.  So when my diabetes was becoming difficult control with oral meds, and the Dr was suggesting other alternatives, I knew it was time to act.  Besides, I was approaching the upper age limit.  I visited the surgeon on May5, 2011 for my first consultantion.  I would have had the surgery sooner, but the hospital who did the initial blood work came back with a 9.1 for my A1C, when my PCP had gotten a 7.8 just 10 days before.  Then work got busy, since I am self employed and travel a lot for work, I tried to get in as much travel before surgery as possible.  So Jan 11, it was!

The hospital stay was OK, I had some very attentive nurses!  I was terribly nauseated and they finally decided after a lot of Zofran, the transderm patch and finally phenegran, it was the morphine making me sick.  They switched to dilaudid and what a difference.  However, because I was so sick, I couldn't make my swallow test on Day 2, so I had to stay another day, which was a good thing.  I lost a large amount of blood, my blood pressure dropped and so did my hemaglobin, I had to be transfused.  I still get cold easily, which I think is a side effect of having lost so much blood.

Pain, once I came home, I took one dose of the oxycodone, one dose of Tylenol and I haven't had anything since.  I was very sore, but walking and moving has helped.

Phase 2 was good, I learned I acutally like cottage cheese.  Phase 3 - I love seafood, and have had salmon, flounder, and tuna.  Looking forward to shrimp and scallops soon.

I see the surgeon on Thursday, let's hope all is well!  I am getting all my vitamins in, and trying to get the fluids in.

But, the very best news.. I am only taking Pepcid nightly.. My blood sugars are 83 to 98, and my BP is running about 136/76.  Can't wait to see where the cholesterol levels are.  Keep me in your thoughts and prayers!
