10 days post op

Jul 29, 2010

Today marks the tenth day after having my RNY....So far I have lost 15 lbs in that time.... my total weight loss is at 51lbs.
Going into this surgery i knew I was considered a high rish due to previous operations that had to go through my stomach which created a problem with scar tissue.
However by the Grace of God, the surgery went well and I didn't have to be open all the way up...the Dr. said i had scar tissue all around except their was a small area that did not have any around it so he was able to go through that opening and do the surgery.
There was more bleeding then expected so I ended up leaving the hospital the second day with the drain Tube still in my stomach along with a pain pump, which I was able to remove 4 days later. For me, I wasn't expecting alot of pain from the surgery but I was surprised to find that it was alot more painful then I thought, due to the scar tissue that was messed with and the nerves that it's attached to.
I didn't feel well for about 4 days but then on the 5th day things stared to turn around and every day since keeps getting better. I'm still suffering from aot of gas which I knew I probably would considering, I was constipated before going into surgery (due to my pain medicine that I take for my orthopedic injuries from my wreck) I found out that you should never go into surgery consipated.... it will cause more pain..... My Surgeon told me that My entire colon was filled with poop and I needed to do what was neccessary to clean myself out asap.
So I've been working on that and every day my bowles are moving more freely. :) (so make sure your cleaned out before surery!)
The one thing that I have found that has bothered me the worst is feeling thirsty pretty much all the time. One thing that has helped me with that along with sipping my water is chewing on ice chips.
Tuesday I went for my first post op appt. and at that visit i had my drain tube removed. I was worried it was going to hurt when he took it out but i didn't feel a thing. so no worries with that! I go back again next Tuesday for my Two week check up.
