One month post-op

Jan 16, 2013

Wow... what a month!

My experience with my RNY since surgery date Dec 14/12, has been great.  No issues at all... I have lost 18 lbs since surgery. 37 since start of Optifast.

I have walked a lot...  The energy level has increased substantially...  I walked in the day 10 kms and felt good that I could have walked more.

One of my main issues at my pre-op weight was being uncomfortable all the time...  I am feeling much better already!

I bought a Fitbit last week.  I would recommend it.  I find myself wanting to get my daily steps in...  over 14000 steps the other day.  I challenge myself each day to get my activity/steps/calories to meet my goals.

I can't wait to see what I can do in the next few months...

December 14, 2012 - I am ready!

Dec 01, 2012

Hello,

Surgery at HRRH is on December 14th, 2012.  I had been thinking of this journey for a few months before speaking to my family doctor on July 4th.

I have gone through all the talking with family, friends and my employer.  Everyone has been super supportive. I am very fortunate.

The process seems like a lot, but I believe is very neccessary...  lots of appointments... bloodwork, nutritionist, social worker, internist, surgeon, nurse, ECG, optifast.... etc.  Every part of this process is all about my health (pre-surgery, surgery and post-surgery preparation).

I read a lot... I have the read/re-read and re-read again the weight loss for dummy's book, other publications, videos of the surgery and of course this website (ObesidyHelp.com).  I read all the great success stories and have suffered through the challenges others have had.

Am I worried?  Of course I am... but I know I have done everything in my power to get ready.

Am I excited?  Of course I am...  I am ready for this!

2013 will be a great year...

I have a lot to look forward to unrelated to my surgery:  My daughters wedding, my wedding, our honeymoon (cruise perhaps) my grandsons first birthday, family gatherings, weekend getaways (with and without friends), etc...

I have a lot to look forward to because of the surgery:  My weightloss... from 260 (at the start of optifast), to 240 (with optifast), to 220 (it was at this weight I remember a few years ago was the highest I said I would every be), 200 (woohooo!  I will be very happy to get there), 180 (I remember getting close to this weight about 12 years ago, but the weight gain sped up back over 200).  Goal weight...  170? 160? 150?   Who knows... can't wrap my head around getting under 200 yet, so I will see where it goes...

Thank you for reading my blog!

Contemplation...

Sep 05, 2012

Hello,

My name is Mark.  I am contemplating having RNY Gastric Bypass surgery.  I started the process early in July 2012.  I have read a lot, spoke with family and friends, had my referral to HRRH, attended the orientation and have upcoming appointments.  If all goes to plan, I will have surgery by the end of 2012.

As part of my consideration for WLS is understanding how I feel today and what the ramifications are of me gaining more weight.  I am 260 now and at 5'5" tall I am BMI 43.

I am writing this for the world to see, but I am also writing this to document how I feel today so I can look back and use for motivation to stay on the healthy track.

How do I feel right now?  Best way to describe it is uncomfortable.

- I can't get comfy doing anything!  Simple tasks are a challenge.
- Get tired and out of breath very quickly.
- Sweating like crazy (Like Frosty in the greenhouse)!!!
- I struggle to get up and down.
- Was diagnosed with Diabetes last month.
- I require a mask (CPAP) to sleep.
- I don't sleep for long periods...  3 hours, up an hour, sleep for 2 hours.
- I am self conscious of my weight and what people see and think of me.  Especially people who I havn't seen in a while.
- Wearing 3x shirts
- 46 pants

What do I want to accomplish?

- Lose 80 lbs or more...
- Be able to run a 5k without stopping
- Get off CPAP
- Eliminate most medicines

What will it mean?
- Being comfortable doing normal activities!!!
- Hug my wife/friends/family without the belly being in the way.
- Good health for everything (longer life, enjoy a more active lifestyle, etc.)
- I will take up less space...

So I will blog here from time to time to let you know how i'm doing and to reflect to this moment in time.

Take good care!
Mark
