Week One(ish) Post Op

Dec 22, 2009

Wow. That is about all I can say for the first week. I've not had to have surgery since I was a kid, so the whole experience was quite wild.

I was in surgery for about an hour and a half and then in recovery for about another hour and a half. They took me to my room and I remember my wife coming in and the nurse coming by. They wrote on the white board that I would be walking at 1pm. I looked at the clock and saw it was 11am and I was relieved that I would be able to sleep for a couple hours.

When I got up to walk I was relieved to find that they were able to complete the surgery laproscopically. I was never told they would have an issue, but I did have a fear that I would wake up having been opened up completely.

The walking started very slowly, but I quickly picked up the pace and the laps. I actually walked five miles before I was discharged after only two nights. All in all I was feeling pretty good.

Since I had the surgery in Indiana and I live in Michigan, I decided to stay with my folks for a couple days just to make sure all was well. That was when the pain and discomfort really set in. I had so much gas and bloating, it was miserable. Add to that the pressure of keeping up with the food / liquid / protein / medicine schedule and I was feeling pretty overwhelmed. I actually had convinced myself that I was lactose intolerant and decided to lay off the cottage cheese thinking that was part of the cause.

I decided to come back to Michigan after three nights at my parents. I thought it would do me some good to get back into the routine at home. I would say that has been mostly true. It is also good to sleep in your own bed.

The days since have been gradually been better. I tried milk again and have been able to tolerate it. That has really cleared the way for getting in protein, which I think has been helpful to getting a little more energy.

As for the stats, at one week I'm down 15 pounds. It is nice to see the scale move down but I will say that I have never worked harder to lose 15 pounds in my life!
